House Books . . . photographs . . art works . . . and toys This is what is anticipated when John F Kennedy, the President-elect, is inaugurat ed January 20. A look at ihe homes in which Mrs. Kennedy, the next First Lady, has lived, suggests pretty much the "trimmings" she will give the private, fam ily rooms of the executive mansion. , Home to Jacqueline Kenne dy before her marriage seven years ago, was "Merrywood," the estate of her stepfather and m ot h e r, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh D. Auchincloss. The es-j tate Is situated along the Po tomac river in nearby Mc Lean, Va. There, in a spacious, three story brick home she was sur rounded by beautiful antique Furniture, fine oriental rugs, books, portraits, and photo graphs. . The home is furnished with liscerning and imaginative :aste that brought admiring remarks from guests at a re ;ent tea. But it is-by no means j home so polished and for mal as to be stiff. It has the air of having been much lived in and enjoyed. Many Books The living room, off a wide center hall, has books in re cessed cases between the two big windows at both ends. Portraits adorn the soft gray walls. There are family pho tographs on the small tables. The living room opens to a semi-oval sun parlor overlook ing a wide lawn, where trees run down to the Potomac. Books line the walls on either side of the fireplace. But the outstanding homey features of this bright room are the numerous photograph ic albums heaped on a long table before a couple of the windows. The red and green leather albums are filled with snapshots of Jackie, the President-elect and other members of the family. Clearly, snap shots in this family are not something to store a .way out of sight but mementos to be enjoyed and looked at often. On the other side of the wide hall are the dining room and an old-fashioned library. The Kennedys' own George town home in Washington from which they will be mov ing to 1600 Pennsylvania ave nue, reflects not only their in terest in books but also Mrs. Kennedy's love of art. A re cent visitor noticed that al most every table in the small, twin living rooms bore an art book. Hung on one of the champagne-colored walls was a collection of sketches by the 18th century artist, Vernet. v Books on Spanish painting, on Renoir, and on Degas were on 1 the shelves flanking the fireplace. A small desk held Bertrand Russell's "Wisdom of the West." The table on the sun porch there bore copies of "Paris Match," "Art News," and The Five Great Dialogues of Plato." Hung at the foot of the stairs in the parlor was the water color Mrs. Kennedy did to welcome her husband back from his triumph at the Demo cratic National convention. Mrs. Kennedy likes to change the art in her home from time to time, replacing an old with a new piece, Probably not all the Ken nedys favorite possessions will he moved to the White House, but it seems certain that Car oline will take all her favor ite toys with her. She likely will have her own book shelf, too, as she has now on the lower part of a small table in the Georgetown living room. Noticed among her books re cently were "Bunny Button" and "Early Alphabet." The family's quarters in the White House seem certain to carry out Mrs. Kennedy's belief that a home should be comfortable and attractive, but it should not have things around it that require one to say to a child, "Don't touch." Dance Announced At Domiciliary The anuual Christmas for mal dance sponsored by the department of Oregon ladies auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be held in the Veterans Administration domiciliary theater building December 19. It will start at 8 p.m. Vic Flood's orchestra will play. A bus will leave Trail way depot at 7:30 p.m. to take local residents to the dance. GODWIN United Press International Washington - (UPD - The Ag ricultural Research service has issued a pamphlet which tells you how to get thin, get fat or stay just as you arc. The pamphlet, "Food And Your Weight," is billed by the Agriculture Department as "a basic guide to weight control for people who want to lose, gain, or maintain their weight." The guide, prepared by ARS nutritionists, stresses the need for a varied and balanced diet of regular foods SUNDAY, DECEMBER IS, 1960 f for healthful and lasting weight control. "Food And .Your Weight" provides the most up-to-date facts available on calorics and energy needs. It explains how the same family menus can be used for people on low and high-calorie diets, with a few simple changes. A table showing the number of calor ies in many common foods is included. The guide also includes a table of average weights for men and women of various heights and shows how to fig ure the number of calories needed every day to maintain desirable weight.
