DECEMBER 11, 1960 2 A Break Said Near In Newhouse Case Portland - IUPD - Detectives investigating the shooting of newspaper executive Donald Newhouse have announced they have information that may identify an assailant s gel away car. Officers said the description was contained in an anony mous letter written in re- sponse to a $10,000 reward posted by the Oregonian and the Oregon Journal. Newhouse, a pro duction manager for the Oregonian, is recovering from the shooting two months ago. The letter reported a car answering the description of a vehicle wanted in the New- house case was abandoned in southern Oregon soon after the shooting. Officers said they are await ing additional facts from the writer of the letter. med9ohd MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OREGON Salem Control Tower Approval Expected Salcm-JPD-The final step toward a control tower and landing control facility at Sal en's McNary Field is expected to be taken by the Salem city council Monday night. The council is expected to approve $27,000 as the city's share in construction costs of the tower. Two Industrial Fatalities Reported Salem-IUPII-There were two industrial fatalities reported to the Oregon Industrial Acci- den Commission last week and a total of 1,038 accidents. The fatalities were Orlando Ray Cutler and Mauflce John Foley, both of Kennewick, Wash. Both died in a Novem ber accident 50 miles east of Gardner. I n d e pendence - (UPD A stormy Independence city council meeting Friday night resulted in the immediate firing of Police Chief George Utley, appointment, of two council members and an at tempt to unseat Mayor Ray Dunckel. The scries of events began Wednesday when Utley was notified of his dismissal be ginning in January. A move to put him immediately on vacation was blocked when ft was found two council mem bers were unqualified. In the face of protests by City Attorney Fred Calerf, Mayor Dunckel Friday night reappointed Clarence Thomas to the council and named Carl Groth to succeed Dr. Robert Hjort on the council. Then by a 5-1 vote, the council fired Utley on the spot. The mayor appointed one of Utley's officers, Harvey Sen.' Dimick Named Finance Chairman Portland-UIPl) - State Sen. Dan Dimick (D Roseburg) Saturday was named Demo cratic finance chairman of the Fourth Congressional district by Dewey Rand, state finance chairman. The mayor's qualifications were questioned by a citizen attending the meeting. John Kolski said he was unable to find Dunckel's name in prop erty tax records of Polk coun ty. The city charter requires city officials to own property in Independence and to pay taxes. Dunckel dismissed the com plaint and said later he owns prqperty but most of it is in his mother's name and he pays the taxes. Linfield College ' On Time's Lisf McMinnville - Linfield col lege has been included in Time magazine's list of "Little Known - and Good colleges, Time's entire education sec tion for tile Doc. 5 issue dis cusses what Time calls "un known or i n s u f ficiently known" colleges. Linfield is one of the 50 American colleges and uni versities which Time lists as "private four-year liberal arts colleges that can give educa tion to the high school senior who cannot get into Amherst and Co. . . . what most of them have is that if they are not nationally known, they deserve to be." The article points out that nearly all the 50 colleges list ed have fewer than 1,500 stu dents, require the College Board Scholastic Aptitude test and other tests, were church founded and still require chapel and religious courses, and that nearly half the pro fessors in each hold doctorates - well above the national average. Union To Strike West Coast Phone Everett - IUPD - The Elec trical Workers Union has de clared its intention to strike against the West Coast Tele phone Co., according to Fed eral Mediator Barney Toner. The union declined to re veal the date set for the walk out. The union, which represents l.bOO workers in Washington, Oregon and Northern Califor nia, is seeking a 10 per cent wage increase. The company's best offer was three per cent. Hjelle, Salem businessman, has been appointed State Highway Commissioner of North Dako ta by North Dakota Gov.-Elect William Guy. Hjelle moved iere from North Dakota last May to take over the Hollywood Coast-to-Coast store, a hardware firm. Hjelle, 42, was born in North Dakota and lived there all fcis life before moving to Oregon last spring.
