o SECTION D PAGES 1 to 8 MEDftRDdgTRIBUNK SflPCDIffiTS MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 8, 1960 Tornado Hoopsters Meet Bucs Friday Only one letterman is ex pected to be in the starting lineup for the Marshfield High school Pirates Friday when the Coos Bay club op poses Medford in the basket ball opener for both schools. The game is set for 8:15 p.m. at Hedrick Junior High school floor. Medford will play North Bend here on Saturday. Lone letterman starter for fhe Pirates will be Bob Reich ert, 5-10, who has earned two monograms but was a non regular last season. Others who may get the opening calls of Coach Bruce Hoffine are all up from the junior varsity. One is Gary Crabaugh, 5-8, top scorer for the Buc jayvees last season. Then are Stan Traxler, 6-3, Bill Chandler, 6-2, and Wiley Smith, 5-11. Reichert, Chandler and Smith are seniors and the others juniors. Termed "the sixth man" is Arnold Sampson, 5-10, a sen ior who has played JV ball. Marshfield's only returning regular is Bob Buries, 6 i senior. He suffered a broken ankle in the football game with Medford this fall and has just "thrown away" his crutches. It may be another two weeks before he'll be with the hoop team. The Pirates lost a diamond) in the rough about 10 days ago when Mike Mattox, 6-6 junior, moved back to Inde pendence, Mo. He hud trans ferred from that school to Marshfield last fall. Loss of Mattox, after having worked him in drills, reportedly has forced Hoffine to switch his offense. Hoffine, however, has said he thinks he will have a real interesting ball club which may run more than did last year's Pirates. Medford will meet a vet eran team when it goes up against North Bend. The Bull dogs likely will have five lettermen starting and four other monogram men may be among reserves. Of the pos sible North Bend starters Chuck Johns, 6-6, Ron Kersey, 5-10, and Jeff Allen, 5-11, were regulars last season. North Bend has played one game. It defeated Coquille 32 to 28. Black Tornado Coach Frank Roelandt said this morning that his club is "coming along a little better." It had a good scrimmage Tues day and worked on a pressing game on Wednesday. Roe landt indicated that he may call upon Bob Quinney, Dick Ragsdale and Jim Berry as starters with either Scott Eaton or Howard Brown get ting the fifth spot. The mentor said that the ankle Steve Hoots turned is "much better and he can go." Hood's ankle is still sore but he may be able to play some this week. He's expected to be at full strength next week. CORNISH Washington-ftlPl-Senate box ing investigators were expect ed to decide today whether multi millionaire promoter James D.
