Jorge Robreno Marie- gos for the "wanton and tin provoKed" shooting. It also demanded a report on Cuba's investigation of the Nov. 19 snooting. Ihis country made the charge and demands' in a pro test note delivered to the Castro regime in Havana this week. The American is Wayne E Henderson, 24, Pasadena, Cal if., embassy communications supervisor in Havana. .Hen derson was shot in .the ab domen and is recovering in a Cuban hospital. Officials said he is "much improved" but still not well enough to be moved. . -.. -. Henderson is under techni cal detention by the Cuban government aS a :material wit ness in the case., U. S.- offi cials said Robreno also was said to be under detention pending completion of Cuba's investigation. , ' .. Officials said the incident occurred when Henderson tried to pay- for drinks at the Club 21 with a U. S. 55 bill. They said Robreno, seated on the next bar stool, claimed the bill -was. counterfeit. A Cuban, .policeman, .Alberto Blanco, arrested Henderson and took him outside. Robre no came out and shot the American,' officials said. POLITICAL ADVICE New Brunswick, N. And he feast' ;d on two servings of baked grits pre pared by Mrs. Robert Tift of Albany, Ga., wife of one of the wealthiest landowners in the slate, at an outdoor picnic. i In another dining table The President disclosed on Portland Woman Petitions Court In Freedom Bid Salem (UPD Mrs. Ann Avent of Portland, serving life in the Oregon peniten tiary for murder, has peti tioned Marion county circuit court to designate her as her own counsel in a bid for free dom. Mrs. Avent is scheduled to appear before Judge George Jones at 9:30 a.m. Monday. Mrs. Avent was convicted of second degree murder in 1955 in Morrow county for the June 4, 1955 shooting of Portland Attorney Delmore Lessard in a Heppncr case. Lessard was the attorney for the woman's ex-husband. Said Refused Counsel She filed a petition last April under the post convic tion act seeking release. Among other things she charg ed that she was refused the right of counsel when arrest ed and that Morrow county authorities conspired against her before the trial. She said evidence on her behalf was destroyed and she was held incommunicado for five days while authorities gave their version of the crime to the press. The state then filed a mo tion calling on her to comply with pleading requirements of the act and to write the petition setting forth specific grounds for release. -The Railroads Want Excise Tax Repeal Las Vegas, Ne v. - (UPD -1 ina annual convention of the National Association of Rail road and Utilities Commis sioners ended Thursday with an appeal that wartime ex cise taxes on communications and transportation be re pealed. About 300 delegates attend ing the convention also pass ed a resolution urging Con gress to give more authority to states and less to the fed eral government in areas in volving intrastate railroads.
