He is recommending a total program of $100.5 million for the next bicnnlum, an in crease nf $13.3 million over the present but including a $13 million medicare plan - medical case for those aged not on old age assistance. The second biggest item In welfare would be aid to de pendent children, $18,626,400, also cut from the present lev el of $19.1 million. Increases are called for in both old age medical care and aid to dependent children. OFFICE FORCE INCREASE Salem-rtlPD-Gov. Mark Hat field has asked the 1961 legis lature to increase his office force because of an increased work load. Hatfield's budget asks for one more executive assistant, two more full-time stenogra phers and two part-time ste nographers for periods of six months each. Excluding part time help this would bring his staff to 16. f GOP LEADERS MEET New York Gov. Nelson A. Rocke feller, left, and Vice President Richard M. Nixon are shown as they entered Nixon's office in the Capitol this morning for a get-together to chart plans for strenthening the Republican party. ' (UPI Telephoto) Rockefeller, Nixon To Work Together For Stronger Party Washington -IliPD-New York Gov. Nelson Rockefeller said today that he and Vice Presi dent Richard M. Nixon would work closely together to make the Republican party "a con structive minority force while the Kennedy adminis tration is in office. Rockefeller made the state ment following a breakfast conference with Nixon in his office at the Capitol. It was their first meeting since the election. Problems Recognised Rockefeller said he and Nixon "recognize the magni tude of the problems - both national and international - which this country faces" and plan to keep in touch with each other on these matters. Rockefeller strongly denied that he was engaged in any sort of a power struggle with Nixon lor leadership of the Republican party. Dick is obviously the titu lar leader of the party because he was the last person to be nominated by the Republican National Convention," the governor said. One reporter told Rocke feller he had been described a cloud on the horizon of Richard Nixon." Rockefeller smilingly com mented, "Well, that's a poetic thought we could let pass over the horizon." During his talk with news men, Rockefeller also re ferred to Sen. Thruston B. Morton of Kentucky as "head of the party" in his capacity as Republican national chair man. He said he thought Morton should continue in the post because he has done an "out standing job" and "has shown the capacity to work with all elements of the party." Doesn't Agra Rockefeller said he couldn't agree with Morton's descrip tion that the Nov. 8 election was a "national disgrace" be cause of alleged voting irregu larities in some areas. "Frankly," he said, "I don't know enough about the details of the charges." The governor declined after a meeting with President Eis enhower Thursday to agree that Nixon was the "natural" choice for the - Republican presidential nomination four years from now. By implica tion, Rockefeller did not rule out his own chances of captur ing the nomination. MAPLE REHIRED Salem-IUPD- Howard Maple, who has been manager of the Oregon State Fair since 1957, has been rehired for 1961 by the State Fair commission. His annual salary will con tinue at $7,500. The commis sion' indicated It would like to give him a pay boost but added this is controlled by statute and can only be chang ed by the legislature. Gov. Mark Hatfield made no specific recommendations of pay raises for any state em ployee but Maple could get a raise under the $15 million Hatfield recommends for gen eral raises for state em ployees. Hatfield provided another $62,000 in his 1961-63 budget for maintenance of buildings and grounds at the state fair grounds here but cut S4.500 from the publicity budget, making it $37,500. The total recommended fair budget for the next biennium it $1,088,418 compared to the prwent $978,135.
