If we ean't work out some sort of schedule, iaereTl be a Mow-sip one of these days and we'll talk turkey, Sitters they leave us slone or we'll i sjjovs to Alaska! i '. , -' Mrs. a, T.-To hear rr,y dmighior-in-law talk aoout us m though we were their en emies 3s a real shock. She and Bocf grew up to gether in this neighborhood and the two families are good friends. Satorally iwe are drawn to those darling ehil dren the way rssils run to a magnet. We try to make things easy. Lilian's mother always brings some oi her home made bread and cookies and I do all her weeding. As for spoiling the chil dren, sure we bring ibem a few toys aad goodies. Or the grandfathers take them to the movies onee ia a while, or to piay ball In the park, I don't call that spoiiiag, I call that; loving, and how ean a child ; get too mush loving? i ; The Councils There's Be; cluubt that grandparents can; he one oi life's greatest bless-; mgs to a child. In fact, they; may well account for the; , good mental health of many; j children who . were "6c- prived" in other departments j important to sound emotions; j growth. I But with the TVs, junior and senior, the key word is Bestraint, Because sf the com plex relationships inoived parent, ehiid, in-law, neighbor -a skilled outsider should be sailed upon to draw up the i "ground rules" for fair play I between the generations. I The grandparents will be I reminded that Rod's and Lil i lan's children are not piay ; things for their idle momenta. I The youngsters' lives are be i ing directed by conscientious, i responsible parents who must I oe respected, considered and I deferred to in ail matters per- srr.e and fa Randc-ii "dropping-in" will be slopped. V:s:ts :: oe spaced a:id timed, and-ts k:-p excitement and distraction to a ajinhnum-linsited to one set of grandparents at a time. Too much hovering around married ehiidren may be due to two unfortunate attitudes: either a belief that the young people can't possibly hsndis their owa household, or an. iaertia that prevents the older people from seeking out new iateresis, new friends, new diversions when the days of fuil-thne parentiag are past. As for Lilian and Sod, onee the pressure ef sueh intcr.sa parental attention is reduced, iney may start uisnxing their lucky stars for tne treasure oi so mucn love on tap lor tnem and tneir cmldren, Mrs, T. :s rsgnt :r. be::ev:r.g mat i there's no such inmg as too : much iove, but "iove'c must Be defined. Occasionally a grownup thinks he s "loving" a cniid wnen ne" really 'using" the caild far tt.s own purpose." Certainly all of us are tne better for the extra cuddling, companionship, treats and guidance offered by kind and unselfish grandparents. And many who never knew this boon themselves or whose parents have passed on and cannot extend it to grandchil dren will envy Lilian and Sod their "jackpot." (Copyright 1SS0, General Festuref Corp.) Pearson Protests Masonic Letter Portland - State Sen. Wal ter J. Pearson, a Mason and Shriner, strongiy protested today an anti-Kennedy letter mailed to members of the Scottish Rite Masonic Lodge In Oregon by Leslie M. Scots, a high officisi of the fraternal organization. The letter by Scott, a Re publican former state treas urer, urges Mason? not to vote for Kennedy because he Is a Catholic. f am shacked and very dis gruntled that the Masonic Or der would allow such a letter to be sent sat along with the infisfflunatory literature which accompanied it." Pear son wrote to E, G. Wendiing, secretary o( the Scottish Rite Temple in Portland. ; The;Masonic Order may not agree with the Catholic church with regard to xhs form of religion, but certain ly Catholics are Christian peo ple and not : entitled to any such political blast by a narrow-minded Republican like Leslie Scott.
