Medford&JTribune . SECTION C MEDFORD, OREGON, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, I960 PAGES 1 to 8 Historian Has Arguments For Kennedy; Scorns Nixon Washington - (UFD - Arthur . M. bchlesinger Jr., the youth- Jul Harvard historian, has Turned from history to poll tics again to assure voters -4ha V ! . . . wicic ia a great aeal oi miierence between the 1960 rivals tor the presidency. As a Democrat and nartt . fan of Sen. John F. Kennedy, the Democratic nominee, he . marshals arguments in sup port of Kennedy and has lit . tie but-scorn for Vice Presi dent Kichard M. Nixon, the . Republican candidate. Schlesinger dissects the per sonalities and policies of the ..two candidates and their po litical parties in "Kennedy or Nixon: Does It Make Anv Difference?" (MacMillan, New York). - dc sets oui to expioae wnat he regards as the myth that .there is little difference be tween the two nominees and their parties and that they are in fact "the gold dust twins of American politics." Admitting that he cannot claim impartiality, Schlesing er said he bases his arguments whenever possible on "hard and verifiable facts." His Re publican critics will no doubt say his facts are really his own opinions and interpretations. Schlesinger contends . the vice president has been on both sides of various issues so often that he can switch without challenge while Ken nedy cannot do so without shocking the voters. Can Chang Freely "Nixon can change about freely and safely; Kennedy can't," he writes. "Nixon, in short, is perceived and accept ed as a chameleon; Kennedy as a man of some -steadfast ness or conviction. If both men appear at times cool in their attitudes toward issues, this is, I would say, because Kennedy reasons about them and Nixon doesn't much care. For Nixon Issues are sec ondary to politics, for Ken nedy politics tend to be sec ondary to issues." Schlesinger also offers this contrast: "Nixon remains a charac teristic figure of the Eisen- Handicapped Persons Said Ready, Willing To Make Good on Job Edltor'i note: This li National Employ the Physically Handicapped week as proclaimed by President -Elsenhower. John W. Slnders, chair man of the Jackson county com mittee for the employment of the . physically handicapped, wrote the . following article In observance of ' the week. Slnders Is also personnel -ouicer- and coordinator lor trie elective placement of the physical ly handicapped for the veterans Administration Domiciliary, White City. , on the job. There is no reason to suppose that a Nixon ad ministration would be much different from an Eisenhower administration, except the public relations would be more efficiently and energet ically organized. . Standi for New Epoch 'Kennedy, on the other hand, stands for a new epoch in American politics. He un derstands that we can't go on as we have in the last decade . He understands that our' nation must awaken from the Eisenhower trance and get on the march again. He under stands that this requires pur pose and sacrifice." Schlesinger agrees that both candidates-are ambitious men. But he says Kennedy is try ing to sell a program and Nix on is trying ,to sell only him self. - . ' ' J2l 1 lb. 69c 2 lbs. 1.37 on. 6 ox. You can hire them with confidence! , ' A survey of physically im paired workers in. manufac turing industries shows little or no difference between the efficiency, safety and reliabili ty " records of handicapped workers and others. Abilities and skills . . . . Handicapped workers have the same wide range of skills, abilities, and interests as oth er persons. Production ... Impaired workers usually produce at slightly higher rates than unimpaired work ers on the same jobs. Dateiy , , Impaired persons have far fewer disabling injuries than unimpaired ones when expos- ' ed to the same work hazards. They have the same minor in jury rate. Quit Rate . . . No significant difference. Absenteeism . . . .Impaired and unimpaired workers have about the same rate of lost time. Selective Placement . . . Selective placement of han dicapped workers in your busi ness or shop is little different from accepted methods of em ploying any worker. These are the key points: - 1. Put into effect a policy of giving handicapped persons eaual consideraton for job va- cancies - that is, on the basis of their ability to do the job. 2. Know the physical activ ity of the various jobs in your e s t a b 1 i s hmcnt. (See '. checklist for measuring the physical activities and work ine conditions of your jobs.) 3. Set physical standards graded to the actual physical effort required for each job. ' 4. Assign the handicapped employee to a job according to his abilities, skills, interests, and physical capacities. -.! 5. Follow up to insure that the handicapped employee is making satisfactory progress Boys Tell Incident To School Officials . 0 Two nine-year-old Medford boys notified the Washington school principal Tuesday aft ernoon that two men had ask ed them if they wanted a ride home. After declining the in uiiatinn the men then asked them their address, according to police reports. They again were offered a ride and the boys walked away, later reporting the in cident to school authorities. .'. In recent weeks, members of the police department have talked to 9l local children warning them not to accept rides from strangers. This is a part of the safety talks giv en by police.
