New York-IMI-Nikita Khru ' Shchev basked today in his role as "the music man" of the United Nations, based on - a night of singing "The Volga Boatman," conducting "The Star Spangled Banner" and drum-beating at the General Assembly. , The Soviet premier had an other big night on the big town, and despite his teetotal Jng, was the life of the party at Indian, Cambodian, Ro manian and - Russian recep tions. 'I,..:' , Included Commercial During the party rounds the e n t e r t a i ning Khrushchev didn't forget to squeeze in a commercial for his new re vision of the United Nations ' line, charging that the United Nations was sick. "It needs," 1 he said, "surgical interfer ence." The Communist leader was caught red-handed leading a chorus of "The Star Spangled Banner" after he emerged from a reception at the Ro manian Embassy. An apart ment dweller across the street had placed a phonograph on his window sill and was blar ing away with a record of the National Anthem when Khru shchev looked up, surprised. He started Waving his arms like a conductor until the record came to an end. ' Mixed Reaction A small crowd outside gave him mixed reaction-applause and boos-much like the mixed reaction he got from East and West, when he again engaged in table pounding Wednesday at the U.N. General Assembly session when the Philippine delegation attacked Russia's policies. ' Khrushchev started his eve ning off by receiving Frank lin Mercer, a Negro spiritual singer from Hollywood, and two women. The singers start ed a chorus of "The Volga Boatman," and the irrepressi ble Khrushchev joined in with a "yo-oh, ho, ho" in a boom ing voice and with gestures. Good and Loud No one said whether he was on key, - but they agreed it was good and loud. : "The Volga Boatman" is one of Russia's classic folk songs from the days of the czars. Khrushchev later attended a Waldorf-Astoria hotel party given by . Prince . Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia Then off he went to the party given by Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. . . It was at the Indian embas sy that an unidentified wom an asked Khrushchev what he thought of the United Na tions, which the Red leader has attacked .'. as Western dominated. . "Now it is sick," he said. "It needs doctors to help it. Tablets will not be of much use.
