Brain Cells May Regulate Mammal Milk Production Los Angelcs-(Science Serv ice) - The production of milk in mammals is apparently regulated by the same group of brain cells which, in the reproductive process, controls the release of eggs in the female. In the natural process of birth and the suckling of the young, physiological stimuli may act on this brain area so that milk secretion is initiated and maintained while egg pro duction is temporarily held In abeyance. This has been suggested in experiments at the University of California Medical School, Los Angeles, by Drs. Charles H. Sawyer, Charles K. Haun, Jessamine Milliard and Harry Radford. They found that electrical stimulation of a certain group of cells in the hypothalamic part of the brain of the fe male rabbit initiated the egg release process. Destruction of these same brain cells with electric needles activated secretion of milk. It has also been demonstra ted that the tranquilizer re- serpine will block ovulation and Induce milk secretion in rabbits. The tranquilizer ap parently acts on this portion of the brain. Controlled by Brain The brain controls these various functions by sending chemical messengers to the pituitary or master gland. The pituitary in turn releases spec ial hormones each of which Fashion Caters To Many Moods A subteen's moods are many, and fall fashion caters to all. For her more casual moods is a look that might be called "dramatically relaxed," high-lighted by long and shag gy sweaters, black knits and the duffel coat. On the other side are styles that aid her In her wish for a more dressed up, adult air. The fashion sophistication liked by the growing up girl is provided by the new long- torso look. Tunics grow in prestige on dresses, coats, suits and sportswear. Blouses and sweaters come in tunic lengths, sashed at the waist. A leading silhouette is the unprcssed pleated full skirt with Jacket. Important, too, for subteencrs are cased slim skirts, now appearing with tucked waists, and flared and pleated styles. Pleats are many: accordion, tunnel, box, unprcssed. Plaids, pile and prints of all sorts seem headed for a busy seasbn. The plaids - many In brighter hues - and prints, with special favor for the old fashioned look, show up everywhere. Fur - look piles compose coats, line them and trim them. And the fun fashions in pile and shaggy textured fabrics are plentiful, includ ing pants, jackets, vests. Tex-ture-y knits abet the shaggy look. For subteens who practical ly live in separates, fall's lot of versatile tops and bottoms includes the long shaggy sweater over tapered pants, blouson tops, easy - to - wash little suits, culottes and jump ers. Casual coats trend to the three-quarter length, with the duffel coat in the lead. initiates activity in a special ized gland such as the ovary or milk glands. It has been suggested that the same chemical messenger hich causes the pituitary to send out the ovulating hor mone also blocks release of the milk secreting hormone. When the brain cells which send this messenger are de stroyed by electric needle or inhibited by a tranquilizer then the lactogenic hormone goes on its way to stimulate milk secretion in the mam mary glands. In the natural process of birth and the suckling of the young, physiological stimuli may inhibit this brain area so that milk secretion is initiated and maintained while egg production is tempor a r i 1 y held in abeyance. rllk; SHAGGY - Shaggy look gets a luxurious interpretation in knitted mohair - and - acetate coat.
