Fortune Found Pinned Beneath Woman's Clothes Seattle - IUPD - Mrs. Mamie Beck, 78, liked to keep her valuables close to her. In fact she wore her life sav ings pinned to her petticoat. Mrs. Beck's body was found Monday by a niece, Mrs. Frank Muesberger, when she stopped by for a visit. Later in the day, an un dertaker discovered that un der Mrs. Beck's old-fashioned winter dress was a petticoat to which more than $8,000 in old bills and gold certificates had been pinned. Also carefully stitched into the undergarment was a sav ings book showing a Mary Donovan had a balance of $6, 912 in a Bremerton bank. Mary Donovan was Mrs. Beck's maiden name. Bills Outdated The Federal Reserve Bank here said nearly all of the $100, $50 and $20 bills in the petticoat have been outdated since 1940. They included two dozen 1928 gold certifi cates of $20 value each which had been called out of circu- lation by the federal govern ment in 1933. ' (UPI Telephoto) Boots Pleasing To Teen-Agers Boots are moving up and down again in teen-age lash- Ions this fall - moving up in popularity, and moving down below the ankle to give a boot look to the newest casual flats, reports Shoe Fashion Service of Leather Industries of America. The tccn-agor find a great variety of colors in brushed and smooth leather boots, with some boot styles also fea turing grained leather. Deep and golden browns, olive greens, graphite grays, bright reds and yellows attract the teen-age eye. Smartly styled boots fea ture side closings that may vary from small strap clasps through huge buckles on wide straps to buttoned effects. Some boot-styled casuals show gored throat-lines that rise high over the vamp. Flat heels and higher vamp and topline create the boot look. Soft leather uppers and thin, flexible leather soles give these beauties a light, lithe look and a "walking on air" feeling afoot. Toes continue to point in a high fashion direction to give shoe-boots and other dress and casual styles versatile personality. Shell and ball casuals, featuring softer de tailing and an understated look, point the toe, and even squared-off moc-type casuals taper off. Ties, ranging from one to three eyelets, strike a nattily tailored look. Many tie shoes sport novel vamp stitching; others have black edged soles emphasized with white stitching. There s a textured look In basketweave leather flats, in black, brown and green leath ers. Some shoes use two con trasting finishes - such as smooth and grained or brush ed and smooth - for a tex tured effect. SCANNING ANTENNA Washington (Science Service) - An antenna to pro vide scientists with a new tool for the study of the earth's reflecting layer of radio waves, the ionosphere, has been developed at the Nation al Bureau of Standards. With out benefit of electrical or mechanical moving parts, the antenna scans an arc of 42 degrees and can determine immediately the direction of radio signals received from a "forward scatter" transmis sion. In this type of very high frequency radio propagation, radio waves are scattered from cloud - like concentra tions of electrons in the lower Ionosphere and may arrive at the receiver site from many directions.
