The Council reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors. Mary F.-Bob's doubts arc foolish. Robert J.-But how can van know real love? Mary F.-I am 23 and deeply in love with a boy two years older. Bob has a good job and we could get married tomorrow, but he is plagued by all sorts of foolish doubts. Sometimes he says he isn't sure he loves me enough and at other times he says he isn't sure I love him enough. I have no uncertainty at all about my love. I've gone with a lot of different fellows and realty know wiiat I want in a husband. I feel sure we can make a successful marriage. My parents agree with me that Bob is the grandest fel low I've ever known. Robert J.-I feel very flat tered when Mary tells me she loves me so much, but some times the way she acts with other fellows makes me won der. She says she isn't serious when she is nice to others, but I feel she could easily get serious about someone else-if I weren't in the picture. I guess one reason I'm sort of suspicious about women Is that my own molher deserted my father and me when I was 4 years old. I was brought up by my aunt who told me moth er was an unstable type. I also worry about my own feelings. How can I know if it's real love? The Council; Bob shows some insight into his problem when he brings up the issue of his mother's desertion. FARTHER WEST Reno, Nev.( lies farther in the west than Los Angeles, Calif, Private industry payments for pension, welfare and un employment benefits increas ed by $1,600,000,000 from 1958 to 1959. VVORWN6 OKAY NOW PLUG WAS UNHOOKED- HA THAT'S ALL CM YA IMAGINE TH AT This experience must have been a severeshock to a child of 4. It might well be enough to leave a lifetime scar, However, Bob has known devotion and tender eare from one woman in his life, his aunt. And apparently that was enough to give him the emotional power to care ser iously for another woman in his adult life. Now that the possibility of marriage is close, however, some of the old, buried fears arise again. Bob is afraid to commit himself finally be cause he knows that once his feelings are deeply involved he can be badly hurt. Bob, like many others. would like "real love1 to as sert itself in some magically forceful way. He would rath er like it to hit him on the head and carry him off with out his having any say in the matter. But "real love" doesn't work that way. It is built slowly through 'a willingness to give love. It requires a cer tain amount of discipline, of putting another person before oneself. Bob now fears reach ing that point with Mary. Probably Mary has helped Bob by giving her affection so freely and honestly, but we think it would be a mistake for her to put further pres sure upon him. Her feelings, alone, cannot carry the mar riage and make it successful. Bob must meet her halfway of his own free will. In her attempts to pressure Bob, Mary may have tried to make a display of her interest in other men. This, we think, is a mistake. Jealousy is not likely to lead Bob to the altar. It would be unfortunate if it did. But as things stand, Mary would be foolish to date Bob only. She should certainly see her otfier boy friends, with out making an issue of it, un til Bob is ready to commit himself to her. Hiway Mm Nature Scooped Man In Making The First Anchor Neither early history books nor tradition gives us any au thentic information as to just when man first made use of a crude anchor to hold His makeshift raft or floating log in a fixed and stable posi tion. The actual attachment of a suitable weight, such as a heavy stone, to a tong flexi ble vine by which he could anchor his raft to the bottom was probably hailed as a smart triek, Man had thereby made a forward step on the ladder, he had extended the reach of his ana by the use of a long vine. 'Jingle Shell Yet, millions of years be fore the first man appeared on the earthly scene. Mother Nature had perfected the use of an anchor for many of her ; subjects. One of the many was t the common "jingle shell," a ; moitsisk that attaches itself! to the bottom of the sea by j means of a series of silken eords, j These filmy cords have eon- j siderable textile strength, and pass through regular little i hawse-holes in the shell. They are attached to the botton, f holding the mottttsk in a fixed position. Usually these silken anchors hold their owner re-' gardless of the violence of the wave action or pull and push of the tidal current. Because the "jingle shell" is rather common and is found in many oceans, it has many and various names, all rather descriptive of its characteris tics; jingle shell because it jingles with a musical sound when two or more of them are together. "Baby's foot" ; because ot the remarkable likeness to the imprint of a ' human foot on the inner stir-1 face of the shell where the abductor muscle is attached. ! It is also commonly called "lamp shell or saddle shell." Various Colors The shell is thin, shiny and iregular in shape and shows a wide diversity ot colors. Gray, pink and yellow pre dominate, but combinations o these colors occur frequently. Waters where the sadcite shell lives may be thickly populated with them. So great is the number that a sudden and violent storm may deposit millions upon the nearest beach. They often attach them selves to other shells, rocks or any available support and assume the shape o the ob ject on which they are rest ing, which causes a great diversity of shapes. This hab Pruitt Shows Colored Slides of Rogue River Robert Pruitt, Grants Pass river guide, was guest speaker last week at the regular luncheon meeting of the Cra ter Lions club, Pruitt showed colored slides of his trips down the Rogue river, usually four to five days long, and of hunting trips in Eastern Oregon. Phone SP 3-316G " : Small Worlds Around Us By lyrm M, Wsffems it gives credence to the com mon name of "saddle-shell," They are not reluctant to at tach themselves to others of their own kind, sometimes building up into a mass at living moiiusfcs. all Uvin-j haratinitnusty together in one big happy family. A severe storm or natural crumbling away E the sup port casts the entire colony adrift. The waves and the tidal avtttm push and tumble the mass aitusg the ocean bottom. Without their holding anchors the shells ate at She mercy of moving waters. Eventually they join the het erogeneous confusion that the sea deposits at the ocean's outer edge.
