GOP's Campaign In South Said History's Biggest By RAYMOND LAHR United Pai International Washington (UPD - The GOP Is billing Its I960 campaign in the South as the biggest in the history of the Republican party. But while the long range goal is to build a two-party system in the South, the 1960 goal remains as it was in 1952 and 1956: To carry a number of southern states for the na tional ticket and possibly gain a few congressional seats in traditionally Democratic terri tory. To win southern electoral votes for GOP presidential nominee Richard M. Nixon, more Republican specchmak ing and organizational work than ever before has been promised in the South. Nixon himself has promised to visit al! of the southern states. Next to Nixon and his run ning mate, Henry Cabot Lodge, the most sought GOP orators for southern campaign ing are Sen. Barry Goldwater of Arizona, hero of the con servatives; Rep. Walter ' H. Judd of Minnesota, 1960 con vention keynoter, and Meade Alcorn, Connecticut national committeeman. As national Republican chairman, Alcorn read the 1956 election returns and set up "Operation Dixie" in 1957 to build a party organization in the South. President Eisen hower carried four of the 11 southern states in 1952. Although Elsenhower was helped by a nonpartisan ap peal, the GOP now hopes that his success in the South has permanently broken the southern habit of voting sol idly for Democratic candi dates. The Republican appeal to the South is based on the more conservative GOP phil osophy than that offered by the national Democratic party ..and Sen. John F. Kennedy, its presidential nominee. Ken nedy's Catholic faith also is regarded as a significant weakness in the south. Horse Trader Gains Profit Fort Worth, Tex. - (UPD - A good horse trader can make more money In a day than 1 many stock market experts. Take the case of Jack Peck, an agent for the E. C. Johnson ranch at Longvlew, Tex. Peek paid $20,000 at a re cent auction for King Jr., an 8-year-old, bay-colored, quar ter horse stallion. Before the day 'was over, Peek sold the horse for $25, 000 for a quick $5,000 profit. The auction, one of three held the same .week end in Fort Worth, brought in $176, 180 for 59 horscs-an average price of nearly $3,000 a horse. That's almost twice as much as the national average of $1,504 paid for quarter horses In 1959. according to the American Quarter Horse association. The increasing popularity of the breed raised prices from the 1958 average of around $1,000. Hatfields Enjoy Own White House Richmond, Calif. -(UPD- Har old and Lora Hatfield live in a "White House" but they won't be moving after the presidential elections. The Hatfields and the Eisen howers share the same ad-dress-1600 Pennsylvania Ave. -in different cities. Both houses are painted white, but they have only one other thing in common. Nei their tenant owns his own home. The Eisenhowers' ten ancy ends Jan. 1. The Hat fields rent their home. "I'll take my Job, my home, everything here," Hatfield, a chemical engineer, said when asked if he'd switch places with the President. Hatfield, who has lived in the five-room home for more than six years, said he didn't want to move. "Not until I retire. Ike must feel the same way." Basketball Team Tries Dance Steps Chlcago-flJPD-A local coach plans to pull his prep basket ball squad up by the boot straps with more dancing classes. Coach Samuel Edelcup, cage tutor at Theodore Roosevelt High school who taught five ballroom dancing classes in physical education this year, said athletes among the 80 boys and girls In class found the social art "terrific co ordinator."
