Mennis said the major re ports on corporate profits now available from govern ment and private sources are of limited use for financial analysis. Reports Are In.ufficient Most of these reports', he declared, do not give suffi ciently detailed Information by industry or do not repre sent a consistent sample over a period of time, and there fore comparison of a particu lar company's performance with that of industries in these reports "is not possible." The new Wellington sample, on which the firm's research staff has been collecting and analyzing data since 1957, covers 110 companies in 24 industries. They are large, successful companies, solcct- ed because of their invest ment interest. Mennis 'noted that 100 of the 110 firms are listed on the New York slock exchange; the 10 not listed are bank stocks which trade in the over-the-counter market. At the end of 1050 the total mar ket value of the listed slocks accounted for 52.3 per cent of the market value of ail stocks listed on the exchange. Mennis said these compan ies also were selected because of the extensive knowledge income, preferred and com mon dividends, and capital expenditures. These data were gathered for each year since 1947 in order to reflect the postwar period after the initial adjust ment from World War II had been completed. No attempt was made at weighting, Mannis said, and therefore each company is only weighted by its dollar contribution to the aggregate. The secretary of stale said he would file a suit against Lane County Clerk Harry Chase if the county official refuses to certify the office of coroner to the November ballot. The dispute over the cor oner situation came as a re sult of an opinion issued by Atty. Gen. Robert Y. Thorn ton recently that coroners must be elected in 21 Oregon counties including Lane. The 1959 legislature abol ished the coroner position in all but Multnomah county ef fective Jan. 1, 1961. However, it provided that all coroners elected prior to that time would serve out their terms. Memphis, Tenn. C. L. Montgomery had insurance worries. He insured his auto supply store against burglary after It was twice robbed. The insurance company tried to cancel the policy when a third break-in occurred. Mont gomery protested. While he was awaiting the final de cision, the store was burglar ized for the fourth time. this has proved more useful and successful than quarterly estimates, for a number ot reasons, Mannis said. Corporate Income Higher The results of a survey of corporate profit expectations for 1960 made by Wellington in June show expectations of an 11.5 per cent improvement in aggregate net income, based of a 6.5 per cent rise in sales. The major increase is ex pected in the non- durable good industries, reflecting the reaction from strike-plagued 1959. Mennis noted that the 11.5 per cent increase is somewhat less than had been expected in ' the two earlier reviews of the 1960 outlook for the sample made in December 1959 and March of this year. Since last December down ward revisions of about 6 per cent in 1960 net income esti mates have been made for the total sample, with the major drop, 12 per cent, in durable goods industries, especially the auto, steel and aluminum industries. Mennis stated that the Well ington sample is not proposed as an answer to all of the questions that might be asked about corporate profits, but he believes that it gives more current data on the profit out look than any other series now available.
