WEDNESDAY. AW6UIT XT. 1110 MEDFORD MAIL TJtWTOE, MEDFOBD, ORE. 10 A Blondes Really Are 'Eye-Openers' Washington -(Science Serv ice)- Those curvy blondes re , ferred to as "eye - openers" really are.' Two University of Chicago (dentists reported here a study of six men and women in which the subjects were shown pictures of a partially nude man and a partially nude woman, among others. The men's pupils, which act like the lens opening on a camera and primarily expand Jn response to available light, also expanded greatly for the near-nude female, much less for the near-nude male. The women opened their eyes for the man, reduced their aper ture for the female. The women, none of whom had children, opened their eyes widest, however, for a picture of a woman and child. Psychologist Dr. Eckhard H. Hess and James M. Polt re ported in the American Asso ciation for the Advancement of Science's journal Science that their study was limited to six subjects. To the lines of Guillaume de Salluste-"These lovely lamps, these windows of the soul" - the scientists added that there was increas ing evidence that the pupils do register directly certain activi ties of the nervous system, Technicians in Satellite Urged San Diego, Calif. The U.S. currently Is train ing seven Mercury astronauts, all test pilots with engineer ing backgrounds. But M. A. Grodsky, Girard W, Levy and Eobert D. Sorkin, all of the Martin Company in Baltimore, Md., said a technician in a satellite could detect and re pair system malfunctions. They said such a technician would require extensive train ing, probably with an earth bound model of the unit he will later work with in space. But tncy believe adding a technician could provide a payload saving because'of the versatility of such a worker, PUBLISHER DIES Chicago-IUN) - Klngsley L', Hice, (11, resident ot the Tech nical Publishing Co. of Bar ringtoii, ill., publishers of in dustrial and business maga zines, died Tuesday.
