Each article is a summary of an aotual case history. The Council reports on problems that have been dealt with by responsible agencies and counselors Michael A. - Marie doesn't know when to stop drinking. Maria A. - I drink less than he does. Michael A. - My wife and I are in our mid-30's and have been married nearly 15 years. We have four children and could be very happy - if it weren't for Marie's drinking. I have no objection to drink ing in moderation. In fact, I greatly enjoy a sociable eve ning in which there is lots of good talk and some drinks to loosen everyone up. But with Marie, there is just no limit. Once she starts drinking she doesn't know when to stop. She has seriously ember rassed me on many occasions, It's a heck of a business tak ing home a drunken, and rag ing wife after every party. I have tried to reason with her and each time Marie promises to behave, but then goes back on her word. Maris) A. - Mike is trying to show that I'm an alcoholic or something and I'm nothing of the sort. What he calls drunk is only a little high, I drink a good deal less than he does. As a matter of fact, Mike always gets in a couple of cocktails during the day and I rarely touch a drop except at parties. When Mike comes home he usually has to sleep off the effects of his cocktails. Then he wakes up and is ready to start all over. By that time I don't even feel like going out. Several times I've made up my mind to give up drinking but Mike doesn't like that ei ther. He says it looks very queer and It gives people the impression that I'm an alco holic. : The Council: There is a good deal of bandying of the word alcoholic here without much understanding of what it means. We get the impression that to both Mike and Marie It means something that could only nappen to the next fol low - not them. Actually, they both show signs of this disease. It is char acteristic of the alcoholic to deny that the problem exists for him, yet to continue drink ing to excess. According to Alcoholics Anonymous, the first Btep to ward recovery involves the recognition that there Is a problem. It is time for both Mike and Marie to stop blaming one another and acknowledge that each of them has a battle to fight. As long as each can ac cuse the other, there is no hope for their stepping out of the vicious cycle. A first step might be to lo cate an Alcoholics Anonymous unit in their community. This may seem like a drastic step, but the A's owe it to them selves to get real information about alcoholism. As a result of what they learn, the A's will probably aee there is an urgent need to break their close ties with a drinking crowd. There are many circles in which heavy drinking is a vital part of the social climate, and it is more than difficult to abstain, Probably there is a great need lor the A s to re-evaluate their life pattern and their goals. Excessive drinking may be a substitute for many unngs - an Interest in lite, genuine oclal enjoyment and me courage to do something to Improve life, to name u fv,v. One way of breaking away from this substitute satisfac tion is to find some real ones. But another little known animal living In the warm waters of the world's oceans has never been exhibited by a circus - the s e a horse. Strangely enough elephants and sea horses have some thing in common aside from their size and manner of life. In the elephant It is the trunk. and in the sea horse it Is the tall; both trunk and tall func tion more or less the same as a handy tool with which each accomplishes many tasks. The sea horse is a freak: a carry-over from a world of yesterday; he has survived to this day while many stronger and larger creatures perished. He has ways that are strange; in the economy of the sea he seems to be a mis-fit, and he is as peculiar as they come. Uses Tail The awkward appearing trunk of the elephant can pick up a tiny object as east, ly as a pin is picked up with a pair of tweezers, and the sea horse can accomplish any. thing as difficult with hii tail. The little horso-face can select carefully a bit of sea weed, pick it daintily with the pointed tip of its tall, carry the weed to the tube like mouth, wet it and at tach the greenery to its head, neck or body. Once touched to the hard shell of the sea horse body. the weed adheres; the tail re leases it, and the little horse is wearing a plume. Many theories have been advanced for this action; personal adornment or means ot con cealment. Maybe the little fel low feels safe when festooned with bits of growing sea weed. The uses to which the sea horse puts his tail are aston ishing. With It he hangs onto a waving sea weed and lazily allows the tidal currents to sweep past him. He may re lease ma noja ana puon wiw the tall to get him started on his way. When actually under "power," he curls the tail up under him. He carefully raises the tail and delicately flicks a bit of sand from hia face with the sensitive tall tip. Male Pouch The pouch on the malt see horse's stomach may hold the eggs ot several females; they have deposited them in there and left with no thought aa to the outcome. He must have lost the last shred of male ego millions of years ago for today he is resigned to the fact he is the living incuba tor; to him Is entrusted the task of carrying the entire setting of eggs until they hatch into little comma-sized replicas of himself. The sea horse has no pro tection except 1U hard, ridged body. Being unpalatable, he has but few enemies, which is fortunate for the little guy is slow on his feet. Unless he is torn from hia weed-bed by wind or wave, he spends hia life in idlenesa and a "don't-glve-a-darn" at. titude sucking small animal life frorri sea weed stems and adorning himself with bits of y bright colored sea-weed; all of which is silly for he has no place to go.
