TV's 'Candid Camera' Man Answers Criticism That Comedy Stint Is 'Tainted' IKtlltor'i Nolit: flnlor lnvlnff (or VMcnllon. 11 11 TV revlrwrr Fred !)nIK Invllril viirlmi performer In reply la liU crlllelitn at their TV elMrlt. Allen runt. In the lol. Inwlnl "equal time" reply, tnaweri ine rnnrte me.no ny ueniii early leal teenon Uial "Candid Camera" li tainted by touchet of antulah Uial item rrom pracllcal Jokes. Dear Kred: In criticizing "Candid Cam era," you mid you prefer "un tainted" comedy. Well, to begin with, in my opinion, there ain't no tuch animal. By tainted, I tuumc you mean something tlint't hoked up too much, Soiled renllty or rcnllly thai' Im pure by provocation. If you've ever watched a parade of people with their miinufucturcd excuses trying to get out of Jury duty, you'd find a funny situation. Just titling there listening to them would be untainted comedy, or pure renllty, cnll It what you will. If I filmed this utlng the actual Judge, you'd find it alow and pompous despite the basic hilarity of the situation. But if I tct myself up nt the Judge nnd pushed these peo ple to heighten the humor, then you mny hnvc comedy that's tainted, but It's also funnier, Even a still cameraman shooting rent life mutt select and heighten his subjectt. So do we. Otherwise, Instead of "Candid Camcrn," you might as well Just look out the win dow nnd observe people, Exposal Waaknsst Wo feel thnt "Cnndld Cam era" Is nt its most justifiable when It takes n universal min or weakness nnd exposes It so thn' we can nil lnugh at it. As long ns the weakness is n common one, then, In effect, we nrc lnughlng nt ourselves. The man on enmera Is not singled out ns nn odd-ball; only because he's typical. We're nt our worst when we get n man who's not typlcnl of n situation that's. not uni versal. For example, the time wc dropped quarters on the street and shot tho reactions of pas sersby. Tho wny they looked was the wny we'd nil look. I ndmlt that wo hnvc a great temptation to do broader things, for the audience seems to love them, but wc limit ourselves In the interest of good taste. You mention that some times thcro It n touch of nn guish in our comedy. From tlmo to lime, we're continu ally being accused of exhibit ing sadism, Part of this comes from the fnct thnt wo don't explain Hint our subjects were big enough to want us to use their spot, They wouldn't sign tho releases If they fell they had been treat ed Biidlstlcnlly. So If they don't feel they wore treated bndly, what right do other pooplo hnvo to sny what they were? Yon must remember thnt, of Itself, nil comedy Is exag geration. Wo do try to drnw the fine line. Wo get rewards from portraying situations Hint mnko nil of us lnugh, A sadist would recoivo his pleas ure during tho notunl' filming nnd, onco tho filming was over, wouldn't enro what hap pened. Wc, however, spend the bulk of our time working on "Candid Camera" after the filming ends. In olhcr wordt, our being "Cnndld" Isn't enough. We've got to edit carefully and hedge our beta Just as any other comedian doct. Plut, wc haven't the advantage of re hearsal. In essence, while I'm questioning theso people, I'm directing them, too. We've had a number of Im itators during the past 10 years and all have failed, partly becaute they Just tct a camera down and filmed what happened. They didn't try to condition It themselves. To return to your comment about "tainted" comedy, let me say that thlt provct, " Hain't what you do, It't the way thnt you do It." Cordlnlly, Allen Funt.
