SPORTS PARADE 08CAR FRALEY flpcirl Writer united Press Now York -lUPD- Wllllo Mc Covey, who wua everybody'! rookie of the year Just one aiiort season ago, la singing it and and alow at Tacomn toduy lo prove onco again that it's u long way up and a short step down, t The minor leagues urc lit tered with the fuded spangles of guya who once hit It big In the big leagues. Somo of them muko It buck in one cupaclly or another. But for most of them It's simply a way of life they find It Impossible to give up until, reaching the bottom of the baseball Inddcr, they drop off Into limbo, MeCovey has n lot of for mer big league company down where he's giving It the come back try today, And they nil secretly liurbor the big dreum routine even when they know they're simply whistling pust a graveyard. A Long Llii Guys like Don Larsen say, or Dusty Rhodes; Brooks Lawrence, Country Slaughter and big Luke Euster. What goes through the head of a man like Lurscn when he toes the mound in the Incom parable Ignominy of the American association? How docs a fellow feel when he still curries In his memory the cheera which rocked the bnse bull world when he pitched the only no-hitter In World Series history? Dusty Rhodes hangs on at Tncomn. Why? Because you cnn'l forget the ndulnllon which was yours when your bat destroyed the opposition for the Cinderella Ginnts of a past World Series. There ore mnny of them down there who knew the baseball big top. Look through the International league ros ters which list such os Al Clcolte, whose dream was to wipe out an old family scar; Wilmer Shantz, Warren Hack er, Mike Golint and Norm Zniichln. Slaughter, whose riotous basc-rnnlng won one World Series and whose bat helped capture others, la plnylng- mnnnger at Houston. And out on the const you can see such memories as Suitcase Simp son, Nippy Jones, Jim Brldo- wescr, Jim Grccngruss, Chuck t'odblclnn and Rny Crone. Insurance On Drxam A lot of them try to get insurance on the dream. These are the ones who take the heartaches and the headaches of managing no matter where. They feel that, somehow, they just might catch lightning in a bottle nnd move right on up lo one of those 16 coveted mnnngerinl spots In the ma jors. There's the rub. For there are only 16 of those eagerly eyed pushbutton perches and the owners, risky as their business Is, fight tooth nnd nail lo keep them despite the high mortality rate. But the enticing vision Is difficult to erase. So the minor league managers sit and hope fully wait for the phone to ring with a summons to one of, the top Jobs. Some of them will tell you they are hupy where they ore, that they have no thought of climbing back to the big top again. But each of them, like MeCovey, Is plotting, plnn nlng and scheming to make life's young dream come true once again. The pity is that for most of these old heroes the song long since hns ended.
