'em far and straight and the
favored Palmer can do Just
that, lie proved It Tuesday
when he had a practice round
four under par 88.
Practice rounds do not
mean much but as Mike Sou
chak, the former oil-conference
football plnyer from
Duke, pointed out, they tend
to tell whether a golfer is on
his game.
"Arnie sure Is," said burly
Mike, who played with him
but lost despite on even par
70.
"He hit 'cm long and he hit
'em straight," he added. "And
that's what it is going to take
to win this one."
Dr. Cary Middlecoff, who
has won about everything in
golf except the PGA cham
pionship, agreed that "it is
going to take the long ball to
win this one."
"They have the tecs about
20 yards further back than
normal," he explained. "Why,
on the front nine, except for
that par three fifth hole, the
shortest iron I used for an ap
proach was a number five."
Palmer and Souchak, on the
other hand, were using seven,
eight and nine Irons for their
approaches.
