Intended to add more base ball greats to the hall, the plan is said to have appealed to baseball Commis s i o n e r Ford Frick. The association deemed it necessary to change the rules because, since 1956, no baseball figures have been elected to the hall. Presently, player candi dates can be elected only on 75 per cent of the votes cast on a single ballot. Under the new rules, the top 30 candidates on the first ballot would be placed on a second ballot, providing there were no first round winners. Also, - each voting writer would be limited to only five selections on the second bal lot instead of the usual ten. Scattered first ballot voting in past years has been general ly responsible for the seeming lack of additions to the hall. As an example, in the most recent election 167 players received votes. Elections by the writers as sociation are held every two years. Those who are voted on are taken from a list of players who have retired within the past 30 years. Under the new setup if one or more players were elected a first ballot, no second ballot would be held. To rule out a possible avalanche of players gaining admittance. only one can could be elected on a second ballot, and he would have to have 75 pe" cent of the votes. "BBS? Zimmerman, a second string catcher, started the week as a 250 hitter with only two home runs and 14 RBIs to his credit and nothing much to brag about except a reputa tion as a good man with the glove. Starting with the nightcap of a double header last Sun day, however, 26 -year -old Jerry has been a mean man with the bat. He's gone seven-for-nine in three games, in cluding a home run and two doubles, driven in three runs and scored three others. Monday, he belted a three- run circuit clout in the last of the ninth to give Seattle a 5-4 win over Vancouver. Tuesday night, he doubled to open the home half of the final frame and eventually scored to hand the Rainiers a 3-2 win over the Mounties. Spokane Rips Portland Elsewhere Tuesday night, league-leading Spokane con tinued to ride high scoring its eighth straight win by ripping Portland 10-0. San Diego rode Floyd Robinson's grandslam homer to an 8-6 squeaker over Tacoma and Sacramento banged Salt Lake, 7-2. Z i m m e r man wasn't the whole show for the Rainiers in their victory over the Mounties although he had two other hits and scored an earlier run. He had plenty of help from Rudy Regalado, who singled with two away in the ninth to drive in the winning tally, and righthander Dave Stenhouse, who handled the pitching chores and kept the Mounties much at bay in scoring his 11th victory.
