For the first time in the history of the sport in south ern Oregon, Medford Rifle and Pistol club will be host to national regional cham pionship match of the Na tional Rifle association. ' Central Pacific regional .22 caliber rifle contention will be conducted on Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and 17, at the Medford club's outdoor range on East Vilas rd, near Woods, Water, Wildlife By Hank DeVoss It is somewhat satisfying to note that the fact-finding committee appointed by t h e county court to investigate the pollution of Bear creek lias come up with a report stating that the creek is pol luted. The committee also has made several recommenda tions that would remedy the situation and it is hoped that the county court will find the means whereby the recom mended steps can be put into effect. WATER AND AIR One of the questions on an IQ lest aski what way water and air are timilar. The best answer it that they are necessary for life. Our problems concerning water and air bare io do with their purity, rather than lheir availability. It seems somewhat paradoxical that man louses up two of hii basic necessities in his at-' tempts to provide other ne cessities. We are all aware of the filthy condition of Bear creek but the filthy condition of our air becomes apparent when we go to the edge of the valley and look back to the center. This is man-created and can be man-cured. NO JACKS There are some anglers who still believe jack salmon are legal to catch, providing they are under 20 inches. Page 27 of the angling synopsis clear ly states that salmon and Jacks have the same season and bag limits. Other anglers are of the belief that jacks have no part in the spawning of the larger salmon and that they are wasted when denied to the angler at this time of the year. JACK INSURANCE According to the man who knows, the jack hat a definite place in the repro duction of the chinook sal mon runs. He is insurance thai no female will go un attended during the spawn ing period. Biologitit have observed large females far up tributary ttreams with small jack salmon in at tendance. It was further ob served that as the stream flow lessened, no large male salmon was able to make it through the low water to the female. How aver, since the jack was sexually mature, he was well able to perform the task of fertilising the eggs of the female. The game commission is asking for bids for tne reno vation of the Medco pond and Installation of outlet facilities. Winners of the NRA regionals, along with other leading shooters, will vie for national champion ships next month at Camp Perry, Ohio. A great array of distin guished shooters is gathering for the regional event. Len C. Living, New Westminster, B. C, one of Canada's lead- undertaking may shorten the time it will take to reverse the declining trend in our migratory fish runs. MORE FISH The game commission will complete the final plant ing of 23,000 hatchery fish by the end of the week. The plants will be made in those sections of the watershed that receive the heaviest fishing. These fish should be 10 inches to a foot long and will provide plenty of sport at that sine. FOR FISH LAKE There should be a few smiles elicited by the news that 40,170 eastern brook trout were put into Fish lake on July 7. They came from the Fort Klamath hatchery and averaged 2U inches long. They will probably become available to the angler by next year and will be a wel come addition to the good fishing at the lake. California Site Eyed by Fugazy San Francisco - IUPD - Pro moter Bill Fugazy was sched uled to leave San Francisco and go to Los Angeles today in his dickering to find a site for the third world heavy weight title fight between Ingemar Johansson and Champion Floyd Patterson. "So far as I'm concerned, I think the fight is coming to California - either to San Francisco or Los Angeles," the Feature Sports Inc. repre sentative told Mayor George Christopher. Among Oregon shooters trying to keep the crown at home will be Al Tauscher, Multnomah Athletic club, foruand, and Bill Schlitzkus, and Jean Privat, Springfield Ashlanders so far entered are Rose Van Busklrk. Archie Haskins and Jerry Heitmart- ek. All-Metallic Saturday Medford will be represent ed in the two-day match by Clinton and Boyden Charley ana Marty Perreard. Saturday program will have all-metallic sights shooting witn 40 5.10 ia at 50 yards, 40 at SO meters, 40 at 100 yards and the Dewar course - 20 shots at 50 yards and 20 at too. At the end of this course there will be a two-man team championship. On Sunday this program will be repeated with scope sights. On both days the shooting is to start at 7 a.m. (standard time). The right-handers said in a suit filed in U.S. District Court that a story which ap peared in the June 13 issue of the magazine pictured them as heavy drinkers, brawlers and playboys. The article was entitled, "The Dalton Gang Rides Again." Owens and Farrell claimed the story jeopardized their op portunities of gaining employ ment during the off-season They asked for a retraction.
