Richard Hanberg, night watchman at the Dwycr Lum ber Co., reported seeing the large cat sUilklng around the mill pond early Tuesday. He said he fired one shot at the cougar but apparently missed. Police said other residents of the area apparently had seen the cougar on other occasions. State police game wardens used dogs In an attempt to track down the animal. Offi cers recalled that a similar phantom cougar prowled the eastern outskirts of Portland for three weeks last January, but eluded several hunters. Woman's Death Blamed on Bed Portland -HOT- Ellen Chur lottc Bcutty, 61, was found dead In her apartment here Tuesday, apparently killed by her folding bed. Tlie Multnomah county coroner ordered an autopsy but it was believed sho died of o broken neck. Employers went to her apartment Tuesday after she failed to report to work. She was found under a 150-pound door to which Uic head of the folding bed was attached. (UPI Telcphoto) Portland Police Nab Texan as Car Thief Portland (UPD - Police cap tured a 3-year-old Beaumont, Tex., armed car thief here Tuesday. Police Identified the man as Gerald E. McLemore, charged with stealing an au tomobile from Pomona, Calif., four days ago. Police said they arrested the man while he was sleep ing in the stolen car. He did not offer any resistance. Morrow Land Development Told Portland - (UPI) - A program for development of a tract of more than 5,000 acres of land in Morrow county, adjacent to the Boardman Space Age In dustrial Park has been an nounced by Gov. Mark Hat field. Recreation, wildlife propa gation and industrial develop ment uses are included In the program of the Department of Planning and Development for the tract which will have more than 15 miles of front ago on the pool to be formed by the John Day dam on the Columbia river. A large bay will be formed, extending i from a point several miles east of the present town of Boardman southeastward to within about a mile of the town of Irrigon. The program for achieving highest and best use of the area calls for participation by the Port of Morrow county, the State Game Commission, the Corps of Engineers, Fed eral Fish and Wildlife Serv ice and State Parks Division. Gardener Comes Up With Something New Hamilton, Ont. Peter Buckley thinks he may have accidentally produced some thing new in his greenhouse. What he planted as toma toes have turned out to be green and yellow lemon shaped fruits, and he thinks some hybrid experimental seed may have gotten mixed with regular tomato seed. Tentatively, before a tast ing test, he's calling them lematoes. Ex-Convict Arrested In Bank Hold-Up Try Portland (UPD - A 31-year-old ex-convict from Portland who said he "forgot to buy a gun for his bullets" was ar rested here Tuesday by police and charged with attempting to hold up the Security Bank of Oregon. Yale Fire Figured At 20,000 Acres Vale -d'PD- A forest fire esti mated at 20,000 acres was burning out of control near here today. Bureau of Land Manage ment officials said the fire fighting crew had been in creased to 200 men. High winds and high tem peratures aided the two-day-old fire Tuesday. The fire Is In Harney and Malheur coun ties and has destroyed huge tracts of pine and juniper. Still another blaze was being fought in tho Jordan valley.
