Shea said that he had had remarkably good results with what he calls fenestra tion of the oval window. The oval window is the opening which normally transmits sound from the middle into the inner ear. In normal persons, part of one of the tiny bones in the middle ear fits loose ly into the oval window, vlbri ting back and forth. In the cases of many deaf persons the tiny bone gets fastened so solidly in the oval window that it cannot vibrate proper ly, and in one of the opera tions now done for deafness, the tiny bone is freed up so that it can move. Apparently in this new operation, the lit tle bone is just removed. In the Lempert operation, a tiny new window is made between the middle and the inner ear. Pancreatitis Pancreatitis means an in flamation of the pancreas -a large gland located back of the stomach. This gland has two main parts; one which supplies a powerful digestive juice which runs into the up per end of the small bowel near the stomach; and two a part which supplies the Insu lin which enables us to han dle and use sugar. Pancreatis is often hard to diagnose. An excellent sum mary of the subject is to be found in a recent article by Dr. Earl E. Gambill of the Mayo Clinic. The symptoms that are suggestive are gen erally found in men in their thirties or forties, and often There are now some 20,000 Catholic priests in the-Unlted States, according to Catholic Digest. Additionally, 3,500 American priests are serving as missionaries in foreign lands. men who have drunk too much and too often. The man tends to get recurrent attacks of pain, mild or severe, usual ly in the pit of his stomach. It often follows a large meal with several drinks. It can last for an hour, but more often it lasts for several days. The pain may be so bad that some morphine is needed. There may come a little fever, some vomiting and a little yellowing of the eyes. Tender Abdomen Examination will show a tender and perhaps dilated abdomen. The liver and spleen may be enlarged. The pain often comes and goes with short or long intervals, it may become constant. There are laboratory tests which often help in the mak ing of the diagnosis. Some times the person's excrement is greasy and full of fat. X-ray examination may show a non functioning or diseased gall bladder and occasionally mass of small stones in the pancreas. It is a good rule to suspect pancreatitis In any al coholic who keeps getting at tacks of severe abdominal pain. Occasionally, the pan creas will be so severely In jured that the patient will have diabetes. The treatment for the dis ease, especially in its later stages when much damage has been done to the gland, is not satisfactory. Ceratainly, if the man is alcoholic He must quit drinking. The surgeon can perform any one of a half dozen different types of op erations, but he is not likely to be enthusiastic about the prospects of success with any of them. An operation may help and, then again, it may not. FIRST LOVE DIAMONDS Regittotod - tnsurod )c No Monoy Both Rir,,. , Yoar Jl -iU.)J Ax? V 1 1 w ivy 'JEWELER 129 S.
