Prunes The peach and prune root borer is an Important Insect pest of penches nnd prunes throughout Oregon. This pest can be controlled with rela tive ense and low cost by us ing the DDT sprays applied nt this lime of yenr when the ndult moths nre emerging. The larvae or borers nre re sponsible for the Injury to pencil and prune treea. Young trees one to two Inches In dia meter may be girdled com pletely by the borers. Older trees often nre devitalised seriously. The appearance of sap, gum nnd frnss exuded from the burrows of the bor ers nround the tree base Is evidence they arc present. Krnss-covercd pupnl coses mny be found protruding from the burrows nfter tho moths have emerged. Some varieties of flowering plum are susceptible, also, to attack and can bo damaged seriously by this Insect. Home owners can protect these trees by spraying or pnlntlng the tree trunk with a solution of DDT prepared by mixing one cup of 50 per cent DDT In one gallon of water. A cup or two of this solution should be sprnyed or poured nround the tree bnse. Two applications nre suggested for ornamental flowering plum.
