WOULD it work? No man can say. Much depends on what hap pens at the conventions. If the Democrats at Los Angeles go all-out on a spending pro gram, the Republicans at Chi cago will have two choices: 1. To promise to outspend the Democrats. 2. To go to the other ox tremo and embrace a program of caution and fiscal sanity. Flowering plums- Prunus. Like the flowering peach, cherry, etc., flowering plums are cross-breeds, hybrids of various kinds, to obtain fruit less yet more abundantly flowering small trees for par ticular uses and plantings. Blireana Flowering Plum Is a cross between an apricot and a purple-leaf plum (Pis- sard!). Foliage is said to be the best of all plums, holding a nice irrldcscent winecolor ail summer. A strong feature is the profusion of pink blos soms. The Blireana Is for Main st. (Valley View to Modoc), 40 to SO feet apart, and Lark spur st. SO to 60 feet apart. The Plssardi flowering plum (Prunes carasifcra Pls sardi), dcvelpode from a southern European purple leaf plum, grows to a height of about IS feet. Leaves are dark purple and foliage is best In early spring. This is for plantings on Mistletoe St., 40 to 50 feet apart. Thundercloud F 1 o w e ring plum (Prunus cerasifera) is another hybrid developed to a beautiful flowering tree, especially for street plantings. Thundercloud is for 11th St., (Oakdale to Central), 30 to 40 feet apart: Hamilton st. (Eighth to Mai n), 40 to 50 feet apart, and Plum St., 40 to feet feet apart. With all the fancy and startling names given to cross bred, hybridized plum trees, rid of their fruit and weight ed down with more showy blossoms and foliage, still the plum containing enough sugar when it drops from the tree so It can be dried till It wrinkles without removing the pit, is picked up, washed. and dried, glossed up with glycerine or fruit syrup, and lo, it is a prune. Sacramento valley a long time ago had 200.000 acres of plum trees waiting for the fruit to drop off. Less than a half century ago Oregon had vast plum tree orchards. Oregon still produces tons of "prunes" Just plums, which go to Cali fornia, are processed, after which we buy at the grocery store as California fancy prunes. They're really good. P.S. A big Linden or Bass wood tree, cast side of Ivy In the Library park, is in beautiful full bloom now. One or two arc on East 10th, and two or three on West 11th st., near Park st. before S p.m. with about 32, 000 signatures - not enough to get the repeal measure on tlic November ballot. Tho low requires 33,712 signatures. Clalmad Monday Deadline Lundgruvcr suld hla group mot with Marlon county mem bers Monday afternoon and hoped enough Marion signa tures had been obtained to push it over the mark. This was not the case. Landgravcr claims the deadline for filing an initia tive was S p.m. Monday be cause the constitutional dead line, July 10, fell on a Sun day, He said State Elections Director Jack F. Thompson earlier advised SOS of dif ferent dates and finally that it should file the petitions on July 8, Friday. Thompson explained that stale offices are closed Satur days and Sundays and that Friday was the normal dead line because of this. But he said he personally opened his office on Sunday lo permit them to make the July 10 deadline. SOS of ficials told him they didn't have enough signatures and they did not appear. Mandate Claimed Despite the lack of signa ture.!. Landgraver declared the 32,000 a victory and said it is a "mandate to the legis lature to repeal the law," which calls for enlarging school districts so that a cur riculum from grades one to 12 within each district is pro vided. A similar repeal drive in 1957 failed, headed by an other group. Landgraver, an insurance agent, said SOS Is preparing a letter to Gov. Mark Hat field asking Hatfield to call a special session of the legis lature over the Issue.
