Portland gained both its first-game runs on a home run blow by Bill Wilson wth Gerry Mason aboard. Commuter Line Closed by Strike New York - IUPD - The strike shutdown of the nation's largest commuter railroad to day forced more than 85,000 Long Islanders into car pools and even boat pools to get to their Jobs in New York City. Most commuters apparently were able to get to work de spite the transportation crisis caused by the walkout Sunday of 1,350 trainmen of the Long Island Railroad. In addition to commuters, the line carries 00,000 riders daily. A forecast monumental traffic tie-up on highways into the city failed to materialize, although traffic was unusu ally heavy. Extra police worked briskly to keep the long line of autos moving into Manhattan from Nassau and Suffolk counties. league decision over Grants Pass yesterday to gain a VA game lead in the standings over second place Central Point. The dlamonders from the Pelican city need only one more win to assure no less than a tie in the final division standings. Klamath has only two games to go in its league schedule. It opposes Mcdford at Mcdford on Wednesday evening and Central Point at Klamath Falls on Friday. In addition to the GP test tomorrow and the Friday skirmish at KF, the Studs have a game to make up with Mcdford. Whether this post poned mix will be contested may be determined by the league standings after Friday night. The make-up is a cer tainty if the game has bearing on the title. Medford, eliminated from title contention by KF's Sun day win, has a division tangle with Grants Pass slated for Friday evening at Cheney field. Two non-counting scraps are on the docket for this week. Slaying Suspect Taken To Hospital Salem-IUPD-Police said slay er suspect James B. Borden, 35, was transferred to the state hospital Saturday after noon from the Marion county jail. Borden, who was released from the hospital March 14, Saturday told sheriffs depu ties he strangled Mrs. Wilma Maxine Spratt, 39, near her southeast Salem, home. Her body was found beneath a tree in a vacant lot in the area. Borden said he killed the woman when she tried to end their engagement. He said Mrs. Spratt was getting a di vorce from her husband and she and Borden were to be married. Since 1944, there has been an 83 per cent decline in the death rate from acute rheu matic fever.
