JULY 11, 1660 Howard Keeps LA Moving With Big Afternoon at Bat STANDINGS By FRED DOWN Unlt.d Prais International Frank Howard didn't make the National league all-stars but he just might make the Los Angeles Dodgers cham pions again, It's a long shot but the 6 foot, 7 Inch, 250 - pound rookie's slugging has the Dodgers delinitcly on the move and ready to challenge for the lead If the front-run- ning Pittsburgh Pirates falter. They're three games behind the second place Milwaukee Braves and eight behind the Pirates. Howard enjoyed another sensational day Sunday when he drove in five runs with a homer, double and single. In his last five games he's col lected 11 hits in 21 at bats for a ,524 pace and knocked in 10 runs. That spurt has lifted his mark to .301 and given fresh impetus to a drive in which the Dodgers have won 11 of 14 games to climb into contention. Howard's hitting featured a slugfest in which the Dodgers downed the St. Louis Cardi nals, 11-7, despite the blasting of Stan Musial, who drove in four runs with a homer and a single. Julian Javier, Norm Sherry and Tommy Davis also bit homers before Ed Roebuck wound up with his eighth vic tory compared to only one defeat. ' Pirates Maintain Load The Pirates maintained their five -game lead when they beat the Philadelphia Phillies, 6-2, the Braves Collegians On Roster Of Presidio Seventeen colleges and uni versities are represented on the roster of the Army's San Francisco Presidio diamond aggregation which engages Medford Bowling lanes on ' Tuesday night. Roebuck Shares Dodger Honors Los Angeles (UH) - It was a toss-up today between Frank Howard and Ed Roebuck for honors as the current hero of the Los Angeles Dodgers. It took the combined talents of both along with Norm Sherry Tommy Davis and Chuck Es segian to pull out an 11-7 victory over the pesky St. Louis Cardinals. But the win was a big one for the Dodgers. Had they lost, they would have dropped to fifth place, The win instead moved Los Angeles to third, a half-game ahehad of the Car dinals and eight back of Pitts burgh. Last year, at the time of the All-Star break in the season, the Dodgers were in third place but only a half-game be hind Milwaukee and San Francisco. . Roebuck came in as the fourth Dodger pitcher and was charged with only one walk while he was setting the Cardinals down in the final ' three innings to gain his eighth victory of the season against one loss. The loss was Roberts' eighth of the year. Burd.U. Wins Ninth Lew Burdette won his ninth game with an eight-hitter the Braves made 10 hits and scored four unearned runs, Wes Covington doubled home a run and then hit a three-run homer during a four - run seventh - inning rally that clinched the win for Milwau kee. Bob Purkey was the loser. Pinch-hitter Dave Phllley three-run homer in the sev enth inning, only the second hit off Don Cardwell, tied the score for the Giants and hits by Sam Jones, Joe Amalf itano and Don Blasingame added two more runs. Jones, who pitched the last three innings, won his 11th game while Cardwell, who pitched a no hitter this season, lost his seventh game. Willie Tasby hit a homer, double and three singles to drive in four runs and Vic Wertz hit a grand slam homer to lead the Red Sox' 12-hit attack on Ralph Terry and tnree successors. Bill Skow- ron drove in four New York runs with two homers and single. Los Fifth Straight Vic Power doubled home the tic-breaking run for the Indians in the eighth inning of weir opener to provide John ny Klippstein, who shut out the White Sox in the last 3 23 innings, with his third win. Russ Kemmerer's strong middle - inning relief pitching and homers by Roy Sievers and Jim Landis enabled the White Sox to win the second game. Eugene 0-1 SF Giants Halt Streak Of Setbacks By SCOTT BAILLIE San Francisco-(UPD-The San Francisco Giants had a win ning streak going of one straight game today and four days off to gloat over it. uave r'niiley tied into a knuckle ball served up by Don Cardwell, his old fishing buddy, for a three run homer that tied the score with the Chicago Cubs Sunday and then the Giants went on to win, 5-3. All the Giant scoring was done in the seventh inning and all runs were unearned but manager Tom Sheehan isn't beefing. The triumph broke a five game losing streak that had seen the Gi ants skid into the second division. Sam Jones, who started pitching the seventh inning, picked up his 11th victory while Cardwell was charged with loss number seven. It was a defeat that might keep the Chicago side-armer awake for a couple of nights. Going into the seventh inning, the Bruins held a 3-0 lead and Cardwell was cruising on one-nitter. men Willie Mc- Covey hit a hard pop fly down the third base line which wavered in and out of foul territory and popped out the glove of Ron Santo the rookie guardian at that bag, for an error. Up Cam PhilUy relipe Alou ran for Mc- Covey and Cardwell retired the next two batters. But then he walked Hobie Land rith. Don Elston, whose stonewall relief work helped the Cubs win 7-6 on Saturday, then was dinned for a single by Don Blasin game which iced things.
