0 o o THURSDAY, JUNE 30, 1960 MEDFORD, MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, ORE Mining Safety Program Marks 50th Anniversary Washington (1IPD - The Bu reau of Mines, pioneers of a safety program to cut the tragic toll of mining acci dents, celebrates its 50th an niversary Friday. ; The bureau, a leader in sci entific development and con ervation of mineral resourc es, was created at a time when coal disasters were claiming the lives of many miners. , It was essentially a safety j-esearch and training agency. Jts cooperative efforts with management, labor, and other federal and state agencies have been major factors lead ing to improved working con ditions in all segments of the mineral industries. 364 Deaths a Year In the 10 years before the tuireau opened operations with a single research lab oratory at Pittsburgh, coal miners died at the rate of 364 a year in major disasters. Now, the yearly average dis aster toll has dropped to 32, and impressive safety gains have been made throughout the nation in all activities concerned with the mining and processing of minerals. , Marling J. Ankeny, director of the bureau, said the agen cy's accomplishments are not limited to the mining field. They touch, directly or indi rectly, the lives of all Ameri cans. Ankeny cites these examples: - The electric bill paid by : most American homeowners is relatively low, partly be-1 cause bureau research helped improve the efficiency of coal burning equipment at power plants so that a pound of coal today will generate as much (electricity as five pounds did a half century ago. Leak Tested - Air conditioners and re frigerators are leak-tested with bureau produced helium a lightweight gas that also helps insure the purity of jnany products from candy mints to medicines and has essential uses in missiles, elec Jronios, and space explora tion. : - Bureau studies paved the Vay for safe ventilating sys tems in structures like New York's Holland Tunnel, and they still are providing infor mation that will help reduce air pollution from automotive exhaust gases and incinera tors. - Some hospitals still are iising radium extracted by the fcureau years ago from domes tic carnotite ores. This achievement, which came ear ly in the bureau's history, made the element available tor medical use af S40.000 a tram less than the price then paid for imported radium. . - By controlling fires that aometimes break out in in aciive coal deposits, the bu reau has saved for future gen erations millions of tons of valuable fuel reserves at a cost of less than a penny a .ton. Aided by Program r - American businessmen 'are aided by the bureau fact finding programs that supply statistical information and economic analyses on domes tic and foreign minerals. Friendly foreign nations also benefit from technical advice nd assistance provided bv bureau experts through the economic cooperation admin jstration. ' - In half a century, the bu reau has published nearly 8, t)00 reports describing its findings in research and de velopment work on minerals, mineral fuels, and industrial health and safety. - Bureau scientists provid ed the nation with new met als like titanium and hafnium. They also engineered the process now employed by in dustry to make zirconium metal, used in the atomic en gine that powered the nuclear submarine, Nautilus, on its 7ecord-breaking run beneath the North Pole. ; -Bureau studies of mining problems and techniques now enable the American coal miner to produce, on the ev- irage, 12'i tons of coal a "day.
