These Bill To Outlaw Payola Receives House Approval Washington - (UPD -The House overwhelmingly ap proved today a broad bill to outlaw payola, rigged tele vision quiz shows and other broadcasting industry abuses. The measure, an outgrowth of congressional hearings in tlie past year on deceptive radio and TV practices, was passed on a standing vote of 208 15 and referred to the Senate. Licensing Plan Killed Before stamping final ap proval on the bill the Home killed by a standing vote of 148-35 an attempt by Rep. John B. Bennett (R-Mich.) to expand the bill and provide for federal licensing of the radio and TV networks. The bill finally approved carries a maximum penalty of a $10,000 fine and one year in jail for anyone who fails to disclose that he has ac cepted payola to broadcast matter. The same penalty would apply to anyone who takes part in rigging a radio or TV "contest of intellectual knowl edge." Preient Law Expanded The payola provision is an expansion of present law which requires a station to disclose whether material it airs is paid for. Alan B. Crowe, 54, Topeka, Kan., and Marvin W. Cox, 52, a Holyoke, Colo., farmer, were killed when a twister swooped down on a rural area northeast of Holyoke and trapped them in their cars. Power Knocked Out Forty minutes before the Holyoke tornado hit, another twister struck rural Sedgwick, Colo. The funnel cloud knocked out power and com munications for almost five hours but caused no injuries. Still another tornado cut a 10-mile swath across south western Nebraska, near Sid ney. The twister struck eight farms but injured no one. Tornado-like winds dam aged farm buildings near Ven- turia, N.D., 75 miles south east of Bismarck. Hail and high winds accompanied a thunderstorm at Linton, N.D. An elderly man drowned in a near cloudburst at Viro qua, Wis. The victim, Olaf Bagstad, about 58, died when a flash flood swept down a dry creek bed at his house trailer. Flood Threat Persiiti The threat of floods per sisted in the Gulf coast area of Texas, hit by the hardest rains in Weather Bureau his tory in the past four days. About 200 weary volun teers stood by today to battle the flood-swollen Colorado river in case weakened dikes give way. The flood crest passed Bay City, Tex., Mon day night without incident and Matagorda, 25 miles downstream, expected the crest about noon today. The tropical disturbance killed 11 to 15 persons in Texas and Arkansas. Damage in the Houston area alone was set at $1,5000,000. Neal Curry Named To Portland Bank Portland - Neal A. Curry, formerly of 1501 South Ivy St., Medford, has been ap pointed assistant cashier of the Security Bank of Oregon head office, George F. Brice Jr., bank president, has an nounced. Curry is a graduate of Med ford schools, and has about 20 years of banking experience. Before moving to Portland, he was on the staff of the Rogue Valley bank, Medford. He has also served in banks in Salem, and as installment loan super visor for the Crocker-Anglo bank, Oakland. Besides completing many courses in the American in stitute of Banking, Curry served In the armed forces in Korea and in World War II. Machinist Strike Far From Settled Los Angeles- (Ml - Striking machinists and Lockheed mis siles and space were as far apart as ever today in their talks aimed at ending the 14- day walkout of 10,000 work ers. But labor unrest that struck other California aircraft-mis sile industry firms appeared all but over. About 20,000 Convair work ers in San Diego ratified a new two-year work contract by a narrow 58 per cent. Douglas workers at the El Scgundo plant accepted a sim ilar pact with the Internation al Association of Machinists Sunday by an 89 per cent margin. Klamath Forest Completes Planting Yrcka-The Seiad district of the Klamath National forest recently completed its first season of tree planting with a total of 185,000 trees plant ed on seven different timber sale areas, according to the forest service. The ponderosa pine and Douglas fir seedlings used came from nurseries at Mt. Shasta, Parlin Forks and Placerville and were planted by both forest service crews and private contractors. Foresters of the Seiad dis trict are presently mapping logged over areas which will be offered to interested con tractors on a bid basis this full for completion in the ring of 1961. Adlai's Chances Rockefeller Asks Glacier Park, Mont. -(UPIl-F o u r Democratic "favorite son" presidential candidates agreed today they want to see a contest for the nomina tion but virtually wrote off Adlai E. Stevenson's chances of winning it a third time. Ike To Get Power To Deal With Cuba Washington - (UPD - Con gress soon will hand Presi dent Eisenhower unprecedent ed power to deliver punishing blows aganst the economy of Cuba and its anti-American regime headed by Fidel Castro. The House agriculture com mittee by a 33-0 vote launched a bi-partisan push Monday night for legislation to grant the President's request for au thority to cut Cuban sugar marketings in this country. Three Transported By Mercy Flights Three local residents were flown to Medford by Mercy Flights, Inc., yesterday from three points in Oregon and Washington, according to the air-ambulance service. Requiring air transporta tion were Miss Agnes Burich, Jerry Jerome, both of Med ford, and Mrs. Mable Murphy, Ashland. Miss Burich was involved in an a-itomobile accident in Newport, Ore., and suffered a broken leg. She is termed in "good" condition by Sa cred Heart hospital. The ac cident occurred June 19. Jerome, who was attending a Shriner's convention in Spokane, Wash., where he suf fered a heart attack, and ar rived in Medford shortly be fore noon Monday. Accom panied by his wife, he was termed by the flight agency as in "not too critical" con' dition. He is now under doc tor's care at his residence and is improving, according to the family. Mrs. Murphy was flown from the St. Elizabeth hos pital in Baker, Ore., and tak en to the Mt. View Nursing home, Ashland. Japanese Student Group Fizzles Tokyo-(UPO-The fanatic left wing Zengakuren Student Or ganization ran out of steam today. The vaunted organizing power of the group that forced cancellation of Presi dent Eisenhower's trip to Ja pan rallied only a feeble frac tion of what it had promised would be a massive antigov crnmcnt organization. Less than 1,000 students showed up for a desultory, spiritless demonstration at the national parliament building. Zangakuren leaders had boasted that there would be 20.000. Plane Crash Kills Two Seattle Men Auburn, Wash. - d'PD - Two Seattle men were killed Mon day when the light Cessna 120 plane in which they were flying crashed into a grove of trees four miles northeast of here. Killed were Ulysis Fred Kleckncr, 43, and Joel A. Par ris, 31. Kleckner was piloting the plane. Erik Martinson, a Kent, Wash., farmer who witnessed the crash, said the plane came from behind the brow of a hill at about 200 feet and hit the trees after the motor seemed to suddenly go "wild." Tuny Bullis Named Manager of Branch Central Point-S. M. (Tuny) Bullis, locally known in con struction and logging, has been appointed branch man ager of the local Howard Cooper Corporation office. Ralph Thomas, H-C sales man ager, has announced. Bullis was sales engineer for the company in the Med-ford-Central Point area since 1958. He has worked in the construction, logging, and heavy equipment profession in the northwest for the past li years. The governors of Califor nia, New Jersey, Iowa and Kansas breakfasted together at the annual Governor's Conference. One consensus they reported was that Steven son's chances now are "remote." The committee action came as the United States submit ted a new memorandum to the Organization of American States accusing the Castro regime of a series of "provo cative actions" which have increased Caribbean tensions. Key House members agreed today that the sugar measure -on which action had been blocked for weeks by a parti san row-would be sped to the White House within two weeks. Rockefeller Reports Their meeting prefaced a business session on federal state relations which brought from New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller a charge that the Eisenhower administra tion is seeking "unrealistic shelter" with a "bargain base ment" defense program. Rockefeller called again for a $3.5 billion boost in mili tary and civilian defense spending. He gave his views in a "background" paper on his report as chairman of the special committee on civil de fense. Discuss Mutual Problems The four favorite son gov ernors, Edmund G. Brown of California, Robert B. Meyner of New Jersey, Hershchel C. Loveless of Iowa, and George Docking of Kansas, said they just discussed their "mutual problems" at today's huddle. Meyner and Brown told newsmen they were not seek ing "united" action in ad vance of the convention.
