JUNE 26. 1960 Hard Downs At Wimbledon Tourney Wimbledon, England - IUPI1 Second-seeded Darlene Hard of Montebello, Calif., quickly polished off a Russian rival to join young Karen Hantze of San Diego, Calif., Saturday in gaining the quarter - final round of women's singles in the Wimbledon Tennis cham pionships. However, Janet Hopps of Seattle, Wash., the U.S. Wight man Cup team captain, and veteran Mrs. Dorothy Head Knode of Forest Hills, N.Y., tailed in similar bids. In addition, Jack Frost of Corinne Miller Runner-Up in Links Flight Mrs. William (Corinne) Mil ler, Medford, was a first flight finalist in the women's com petition of the Oregon Golf association match play cham pionships at Royal Oaks Coun try club, Vancouver, Wash. She took runner-up spot In the flight when Mrs. Les Dar by, Columbia Edgewater, Portland, won the Saturday finale 2 and 1. Mrs. Miller, of Rogue Val ley Country club, took her semifinal match Friday 2 and 1 from Mrs. Harold Weiss, Rose City, Portland. In the quarterfinals she defeated Mrs. C. E. Stephenson, East moreland, Portland, 4 and 3. Mrs. C. B. Collins, another Rogue Valley entrant, gained the semifinals of the second flight. She won from Mrs. John Erickson, Columbia Edgewater, on the 19th hole In the quarterfinals then lost to Mrs. George Grandy, Royal Oaks, 2 and 1. In the third flight quarter finals Mrs. Tom Teutsch lost to Mrs. Richard Stanton, Wav erly, Portland, 4 and 3. Two Rogue Valley men were eliminated in the quar terfinals of the second flight. Atkinson, Jennett Win OGA Crowns Vancouver, Wash. Bob At kinson of the Portland Golf club of Portland, Ore., defeat ed Bill Plue of Riverside of Portland, 7 and 5, here Satur day to win the Oregon Golf association championship. Sue Jennett of Waverley of Portland posted a 3 and 1 win over Mrs. F. W. Cronin of Co-lumbia-Edgewater of Portland to win the women's title. Both championship matches were 36 holes. Atkinson was 4-up at the end of the first half of play and Miss Jennett had a 7-up lead after the first 18 holes. Boys and girls, aged seven to 16, competed in the first half of the first all-comers track meet of the season. In the boys' 10 and under group Jeff Jones dominated the class copping all six firsts. A triple winner in the boys' rivalry was Dennis Brumbach, Medford, 13-14, in the 880, 440, and the low hur dles. Dick Andrews, Medford, 15-16, also took three, win ning both hurdles, and the 75-yard dash. Dennis Ellis, Bonanza, took three field events in the 15-16 age group, the javelin, shot put, and dis cus. In the girls' division, Danl Bulkley, Ashland, in the 10 and under won three events, the two dashes, and the shot put. Rosalee Gastineau, Med ford, participated in all of the events in the 10 and under class, being the youngest en trant at seven years of age. Thrift way Posts Win In Detroit Detroit - (UPD - Miss Thrift- way, the invader from Seattle, blazed home far in front of the rest of the field on the final heat Saturday to win the 14th annual Detroit Me morial power boat race by 300 points, with a 1,200 total. Miss Thriftway, driven by Bill Muncey, finished with a time of 98.013 on the final heat for its third victory of the day. The neck-and-neck battle between Miss Thriftway and Miss U.S. 1, the leading De troit candidate that deadlock' ed with Miss Thriftway going into the final heat, never ma- terialized. The Detroit boat, driven by Don Wilson, col lapsed right after the start ing gun on the final heat when the front end of its blower blew off. Once Miss U.S. 1 was out of the race. Miss Thriftway breezed in with no trouble for its second big powerboat championship of the year. The Seattle craft won the Apple cup at Lake Chelan, Wash., last month. Miss Thriftway also set a new world's mile straightway rec ord of 192.000 miles per hour earlier in the year. A ," B TRAMPOLINE CLASSES Instruction for boys and Kills on the trampoline will begin Monday, July 27, at the YMCA, for those 13 years of age and over. Classes will be on Mon days from 7 to 8 p.m. Students ages 6 through 12 will have classes on Saturdays from 1 to 2:30 p.m., starting on July 1. George Flanagan Jr., Oregon State college student, will be instructor. YMCA membership is not necessary for the first session of the class. Sammy Snead Keeps Golf Tourney Lead Portmarnock, Ireland UPD Slammin' Sammy Snead blaz ed around Portmarnock's Sea side Acres with a rive-under-par 67 Saturday for a three shot lead in the International Trophy and Canada Cup Golf championships. Snead's brilliant third round (33-4) picked up strug gling Arnold Palmer and gave the United States a three stroke edge on 29 rival na tions. The 48-year-old Snead, play ing like a boy in the winds which whipped in off the Irish Sea, posted his third sub par round for a ten-under-par 54-hole total of 206 which put him three strokes ahead of Belgium's Flory Van Donck with only today's 18 hole final round remaining. SO Junior Baseball at Full Blast Southern Oregon Junior Baseball, which had lis first action last week with two games in one circuit, will go at full blast this week. Fourteen games are on tap and involve all three leagues. Intermediates tussles are set for Monday and Friday, Dee wees vie on Tuesday and Thursday and cubs clash on Wednesday. Teams in the Intermediate league have expanded from four to six with Central Point and Ashland each boosting their entries from one club to two. Medford also is fielding two teams. Ashland has dropped out of the Cub circuit but Eagle Point has entered. Central Point has two teams in this division with some of the players on the Mustang squad over-age making that team in eligible for championship honors. Medford has one team in this loop. Games Listed Monday intermediate games are Medford Giants at Cen tral Point Rams, Central Point Stars at Ashland Dodg ers and Ashland Cardinals at Medford Yankees. The Ash land Cards meet the CP Stars on Friday. In Pee Wee league scuffles on Tuesday in the northern division it will be Central Point at Eagle Point and Gold Hill at Jacksonville. Ashland Cubs will face the Ashland Bears and the Medford Tigers encounter the Medford Wild cats in the southern division. On Thursday Eagle Point will be at Gold Hill and Jackson ville at Rogue River In north ern games. Southern scrapes will have Ashland Bears at Medford Tigers and Medford Wildcats at Central Point. Cub league scraps sched uled for Wednesday have Medford at Eagle Point and the Central Point Crater Cubs meeting the Mustangs. Thus Slamming Sam's 67 after previous rounds of 71 and 68 on the 7,093-yard, par 72 course maintained the Uni ted States' lead of three strokes. Meanwhile, South Africa moved into the challenger's spot with a 425 total in the two - man total Canada Cup race as veteran Bobby Locke shot a 69 and little Gary Play er a 71. Player thus moved into a tie at 211 with Aus tralian Peter Thomson, who also was five shots off Snead's leading pace with a 69. The Yanks played in a four some with Canada's Al Bald ing, who shot at 74 for 216, and Stan Leonard, who took an eight on the 16th hole for a 225 and a team total of 441 a matter of 20 shots off the U.S. team's pace. Snead was the day's big at traction and poked and kidded his way around the course while constantly quipping with a shifting gallery which visibly upset Palmer. Palmer denied after the match that he had been an noyed by the gallery, al though he shot the crowd many angry glances and fre quently stepped back from putts with glares at specta tors moving in front of or behind his line. "I couldn't get the ball roll ing and got frightened," he said. "I most my timing and was disgusted with myself. I haven't putted so badly in a long time." Pittsburgh's payoff run came in the seventh on a tri ple by Rocky Nelson and Smoky Burgess' sacrifice fly. Ernie Banks kept the Cubs' hopes alive when he singled the ninth to put Chicago within one run of a tie but Elroy Face ended the game by striking out Ed Bouehee. Paul Giel, second of four Pirate pitchers, gained his first vic tory of the season while Bob Anderson suffered his foutth loss. Bob Buhl, an old Dodger- killer from way back, was credited with Milwaukee's 4-2 triumph over Los Angeles even though he wasn't around at the finish. Rookie Ron Piche relieved Buhl in the seventh and Warren Spahn locked up the victory in the ninth. 23 Wins Over Dodgers The victory, was B u h l's eighth of the season and 23rd over the Dodgers during his career compared with only nine losses against them. Red Schoendienst homered off loser Don Drysdale in the second inning, the Braves added their second run on three singles in the fourth and pushed across the deciding Freak Accident Ruins Chances Of Oregon Ace Bakersfield, Calif. - (UPD - A freak accident kept Ted Ab ram, Portland, from a chance to qualify for the U. S. Olym pic finals at Friday night's National AAU meet here. Abram, running in the 800 meters, was third with 10 yards to go when the pack bunched up as he and Navy's George Kettcrman were push ed to the track. Neither fin ished in the top four to quali fy for the semi-finals. Abram suffered an injured knee, and he was scratched from the semi-finals heat. An Emerald Empire AA en try, high hurdler Jerry Tarr, a Bakersfield athlete, finish ed fourth in his event. Amos Marsh of Oregon State battled to the 100 me ters finish, and finished sev enth. Since two more 100 me ter men were to be named for the Stanford finals, he might have been one of them. Jim Grelle of the Emerald Empire AA finished fourth to ad vance to the finals. Otis Davis of the Emerald Empire AA ran second in his 400 meters heat to qualify for last night's finals. (UPH-Two of the nation's best amateur women golfers looked like it Friday as they staged a hectic 20-hole final in the Women's Collegiate Golf tourney. Jo Anne Gunderson of Se attle, Wash., and Arizona State finally won out over de fending champion Judy Eller of the University of Miami. The match finally ended on the second or 20th hole when Miss Gunderson knocked her second shot 30 feet from the pin. while Miss Ellcr's second shot landed in a sand trap and she was five feet from the pin after five shots. She then conceded. Three years ago. Miss Gun derson defeated Miss Eller to win the women's amateur crown. Both were teen-agers then and Jo Anne Is now 20 and Judy 19. Latrobe, Pa.
