blazed home far in front of
the rest of the field on the
final heat Saturday to win
the 14th annual Detroit Me

300 points, with a 1,200 total.
Miss Thriftway, driven by

into the final heat, never ma-
terialized. The Detroit boat,
driven by Don Wilson, col
lapsed right after the start

blower blew off.
Once Miss U.S. 1 was out of
the race. Miss Thriftway
breezed in with no trouble

The Seattle craft won the
Apple cup at Lake Chelan,
Wash., last month. Miss
Thriftway also set a new
world's mile straightway rec
ord of 192.000 miles per hour

MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDFORD, OK
That round, well cheered
by a gallery of 15,000 golf
happy Gaels, also picked up
Palmer, the U.S. Open cham
pion who rocked to a 39-36-75
and a 215 total.
Thus Slamming Sam's 67
after previous rounds of 71
and 68 on the 7,093-yard, par
72 course maintained the Uni
ted States' lead of three
strokes.
Meanwhile, South Africa
moved into the challenger's
spot with a 425 total in the
two - man total Canada Cup
race as veteran Bobby Locke
shot a 69 and little Gary Play
er a 71. Player thus moved
into a tie at 211 with Aus
tralian Peter Thomson, who
also was five shots off Snead's
leading pace with a 69.
The Yanks played in a four
some with Canada's Al Bald
ing, who shot at 74 for 216,
and Stan Leonard, who took
an eight on the 16th hole for
a 225 and a team total of 441
a matter of 20 shots off the
U.S. team's pace.
Snead was the day's big at
traction and poked and kidded
his way around the course
while constantly quipping
with a shifting gallery which
visibly upset Palmer.
Palmer denied after the
match that he had been an
noyed by the gallery, al
though he shot the crowd
many angry glances and fre
quently stepped back from
putts with glares at specta
tors moving in front of or
behind his line.
"I couldn't get the ball roll
ing and got frightened," he
said. "I most my timing and
was disgusted with myself. I
haven't putted so badly in a
long time."
