JUNE 26, 1961 Baltimore Lead With By United Press International The Baltimore Orioles climbed to within three per centage points of the Ameri can league lead Saturday when they crushed the Kans as City Athletics, 1 1-2, with a 16-hil attack that included home runs by Gus Triandos, Brooks Robinson and rookie Dave Nicholson. The Orioles did most ol their damage against knuckle bailer Bud Daley, who give up six runs before departing after three innings. The loss for Daley was only his third against 10 victories. Baltimore clinched the out come with a five-run outburst In the third inning, during which Ron Hansen, Walt Dropo and Triandos hit suc cessive doubles and Robinson smacked his, fifth homer of the season. Triandos collected four of the Orioles' hits and drove in three runs. Robinson also drove In three. Right-hander Milt Pappas, who won his sixth game, struck out six and allowed six hits. Andy Carey homered for the A's. Kuenn, Power Homer Dick Stigman's four - hit pitching plus homers by Vic Power and Harvey Kuenn led the Cleveland Indians to a 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees. The Chicago White Sox came from behind twice and then beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-6, in the 12th inning when Joe Ginsberg scored from third base on Tom Sturdi vant's wild pitch. Russ Nixon put the Red Sox ahead again when he singled home two runs in the 10th but the White Sox tied the score again on four sin gles and a sacrifice fly. Billy Consolo's pinch double In the 14th inning broke up a tie and paced the Washington Senators to a 6-4 win over the Detroit Tigers. Jose Valdivielso opened the 14th with a single off loser Pete Burnside and was sacri ficed to second. Consolo bai ted for Harmon Killebrew and doubled to score Valdi vielso. Yanks, Orioles Post Victories United Press International Whom do you like, the hare or the tortoise-lhe Yankees, who run over their opposi tion like a steamroller, or the Orioles, who keep grinding out those unspectacular one run victories? Don't answer too quickly. The Yankees may dazzle you, like they did Friday night when Tony Kubek pounded two homers and drove in five runs in a 10-6 triumph over the Indians. Erv Lind's Florists Play Maids A couple of the top dia mond attractions of the summer in southern Oregon are billed for the Veterans Administration Mem oriel stadium, White City, on Monday and Tuesday eve nings. June 27 and 28. The colorful, talented Erv Lind Florists Softball team of Portland will be guest of the Rogue Valley Dairy Maidi. Games start at 8 p.m. on each occasion. These encounters will be engagements in the North west Women's Major league. The Florists are well out in front with an un blemished record in the cir cuit. Going into this week end's activity, the Dairy Maidi were fourth in th e standings. Erv Lind's team has a tradition of fine Softball. Florist teams have been playing since 1937. They won world championships in 1944 and 1953. Just last year they were runners-up for the national and world diadems. In the double elim ination national tourney the Florists lost only to the champion Raybestos Brak ettes 2 to 1 and 1 to 0. MADE PACIFIC TOUR The Linds have been the outstanding ladies' softball crew in the northwest for many seasons. They have won every state and region al tourney in which they have entered. Ability of the defending league and region champs was recognized when the Florists were invited by the Department of the Army to make an exhibition tour of Pacific islands. Those on the current pub lished rosier of the Florists who have gained all-America recognition are catcher first baseman Bev Wads worth and pitcher Louise Maizuca. No-hit, no-run jobs on the hill are not unusual for Massuca. She pitched two in the national tourney last September. Masuca and Jackie Rice may be the tossers for Lind in the Dairy Maid series with Pat Barron and Ellen Callaghan throwing for the Maids. Jacksonville Having Baseball Breakfast Jacksonville - Jacksonville P a r e n t-Tcacher association and American Legion Post 100 are serving breakfast at the Oddfellows hall today with the community's junior baseball program lo benefit from the proceeds. Pet. 1 .8110 1 .800 3 .210 S .167 Central Point Cheney Studs grabbed a 4 to 3 nod and a tie for the Area 4 southern divis ion leadership Friday night when Klamath's ace pitcher, Wally Palmberg, issued a base on balls with the bases loaded in an American Legion junior baseball skirmish at Klamath Falls. The crucial base on balls, one of three free passes is sued by Palmberg in the game, came in the top of the extra eighth inning and broke a 3-all deadlock. Singles by Steve Harris and Ed Allen and an intentional walk to Louis Alvarez, to set up a force play, set the stage for the winning markers. Scoring was spread out over the hassle with neither team able to put across more than one run in an inning. Harris led the evenii.g hitting parade with two three-baggers and a single. Alvarez tripled and singled. Only other player with more than one hit was KF's Don Willey with two. CP chuckers Doug Pfaff and Bill Anhorn held the Klamaths to six hits, all sin gles, while the Studs clubbed Palmberg for 10. Medford Junior Legion Wins Over Grants Pass Medford Post 15 American Legion junior baseball crew collected just three hits Fri day night but put two of them to scoring use, with the aid of ODDonents errors and pitch er's wildness, and chalked up its first Area 4 southern di vision verdict of the season. The 4 to 0 victory over Grants Pass moved Medford into third spot in the Legion standings and dropped OP into the cellar. Medford sot a two-hit, nine- strikeout pitching from Bud Lowery, who walked two bat ters but hit three. First run for the MedfordV ites in the fracas at Cheney diamond here was in the third canto without a hit. Lowery drew a base on balls, got to second on a wild pitch and came home on an error. Jim Calhoun's single, three errors and two passed balls account ed for two runs in the fourth inning. The Coca Cola club then loaded up the bases be fore the final out on two bases on balls and a hit by Lowery. In the fifth panel Dick Ragsdale got to second base on a single and an error and came home on an error at third base on a fielder's choice rap by Craig Laurance. Grants Pass had runners as far around as third base in the first, second, fourth and Mays Stars As SF Wins Cincinnatl-HIPD- Centerfield- er Willie Mays staged another of his incomparable shows Friday as the San Francisco Giant baseballers snapped a five-game National league losing streak by edging the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3. The Giants' highest paid athlete ran his hitting streak through 10 games by slam ming two homers, rapping a single, driving in three runs and scoring three himself. In addition, the speedster stole home in the first and gathered In 10 outfield flies, two shy of the major league record. Starter Mike McCormlck pitched eight innings, giving up seven hits, to gain his ninth win, against three loss es Friday night. But he need ed aid from Johnny Antonelll in the ninth as the Reds tal lied their final run. Willie Kirkland, outdone only by Mays at the plate, smacked a homer and two singles in four trips. Dawson Reaches French Final Chantilly, France-IUPfl-John-ny Dawson of Palm Desert, Calif., the U. S. senior-amateur golf champion, won two matches Saturday to reach the final round of the French Amateur tournament. In the other semifinal, Henri de Lamaie of France, who is seeking this champion ship for (he seventh straight year, won the right to meet Dawson Sunday, by defeating Marius Bardana of France 2 and 1. The Cheneys knotted the mix in the second canto on Harris triple and Jeff Anhorn's squeeze bunt single. Central Point made it 2 to 1 in the fifth panel when Al varez singled and swiped sec ond base, went to third on Doug Pfaff's infield out and tallied on Jerry Hauck's groundout. The game went 2-all in the bottom of the fifth. Hank Herrera and Dave Stip pich drew walks off Pfaff and Wally Palmberg singled against relief twirler Anhorn. Alvarez's three baser and a squeeze bunt hit by Bill An horn tabulated for CP in the top of the seventh frame. Klamath caught up in the bot tom of the seventh when Wil ley singled, went to third on a bad throw from the outfield and crossed the plate on Bucky Wilson's safe sock. Portland Teams Play Game for Injured Player Portland -WPD- City league players met here last night in a baseball game for the benefit of Dick Lombard, Milwaukie, injured in a City league game May 30 when struck by a pitched ball. The game was to be held at Sckavone field. The City leaguers were divided into two groups, one in the span gles of the University of Port land guided by Portland coach Al Negratti, and the other as an All-Star unit. Negratti's squad was form ed by past and present Port land U. players, all intimate friends of Lombard, who played for the Pilots the past two seasons. The All-Stars were managed by Milo Mes kel. All proceeds of the game went to cover medical expens es for the injured Milwaukie youth, who is in critical con dition at Portland Sanitarium. Oregon Women Come in Last Oakland, Calif. - (UPD - One Olympic standard was better ed and 13 Western and Pacific association records cracked or equaled Saturday in the West ern Women s Open track and field games. Earlene Brown, of the Spar tan Athletic club in Los An geles, tossed the four-kilo shotput 50 feet, 3Vi inches to surpass the Olympic standard of 47 feet, 10 inches. The mark also broke the old west ern record of 47 feet, 8 Inches. Pacific AAU walked off with the team title by amass ing 335 points. Central Valley AAU trailed with 99. South ern Pacific AAU had 80, Pa cific Southwest 28, Arizona 16, Montana 14 and Oregon 8. Blackstone, Price Win 2-Ball Golf Dr. Billy Blackstone and Dr. Jack Price held steady on the back nine Saturday to win the men's two ball part nership golf tournament at Rogue Valley Country club. They defeated Bill Kuhl wein and Randall Gifford 3 and 2 in the finale. Kuhlwein and Gifford held 2 up margin after the nine- hole turn but Price and Black stone took the next three holes to go 1 up, halved No. 13, then copped the next three greens to close the match on the 16th hole. On the front side, Kuhl wein and Gifford, carded a three over par 40, hitting al ternate strokes. Blackstone and Price teamed for a 44. On the back stretch Price and Blackstone were three over standard for as far as the tus sle went. Gifford and Kuhl wein faltered to 11 over par. Playing with a 14 handicap to the 18 of the other duo, Kuhlwein and Gifford had to give four strokes to their ad versaries, one each on Nos. 2, 9, 12 and 14. Only place the handicap made a difference was on No. 9 where Price and Blackstone were able to gain a half. On No. 2 the P and B crew had a double bogey to the rival par. On the other handicap holes Price and Blackstone won without the extra aid. Among match highlights was Gilford's tee shot which hit the green on No. 4, con sidered fine play for a high handicapper. This year a South-West All Star team includes players from California, Oregon and Washington. Heretofore they were included in the National All Stars. The usual Tuesday, Wed nesday and Friday night slate of league scrambles is set for this week at Cheney field. On Tuesday Grants Pass will be "at home" to Klamath Falls at the Med ford park. Central Point Cheney Studs and Medford are rivals on Wednesday evening. Grants Pass will meet the Studs on Friday evening. Also on Friday, Medford has another jaunt to Klam ath Falls.
