Mrs. Hamilton Returns from Trip to Chicago Mrs. Moore Hamilton, mem bcr of the state board of edu cation, returned to Medford this week from Chicago, 111 where she visited a number of projects for the Improve ment nf education financed by the Fund for Advancement of Education. Four members of the state board of education and nine members of the state depart ment of education have been visiting projects in other states this month. The Fund for Advance ment of Education granted $5,000 for this travel and the state emergency board ap proved its use. The trips were made pre liminary to drafting a plan for a grant from the Fund under which some demonstration and experimental projects for improvement of education in Oregon may be conducted. Visits in Chicago Mrs. Hamilton visited in Chicago, Evanston, Arlington Heights and Cicero in Illinois. One day was spent at the Uni versity of Chicago. Among projects visited she listed staff utilization team teaching, machine teaching . and various uses of television in the school program. Other centers visited by staff members in the state de partment of education and state board members include Hagerstown, Baltimore, Oma ha, Madison, Norwalk, Cam bridge, Lexington, Newton, Concord, Denver, Lakewood, Palo Alto, Stanford Univer sity and San Diego. Returning west Mrs. Hamil ton stopped in South Dakota to spend several days with her son, Alex M. Hamilton Jr., and family at Vermillion where he will graduate from the University of South Da kota law school this summer. Preliminary to her depar ture from Oregon, Mrs. Ham ilton attended the twelfth an nual conference on exception al children sponsored by the special education section of the Oregon department- of education in Eugene. ; 16-Story Building Set for Portland Portland -UPD- Plans for a new 16 - story building in downtown Portland were an nounced Wednesday by Stand ard Insurance company. The building will occupy a full city block, bounded by Southwest 5th and fitli ave nues and Main and Madison streets. President G. E. Cannon of Standard Insurance said the firm's building will be of glass and aluminum construc tion. It is scheduled for com pletion In 1863. The structure will be set in a landscaped plaza with underground parking for 300 Two Injured in Highway Accident Two Medford residents were Injured Wednesday shortly before noon in a one vehicle accident west of Rogue River near the Jackson county line. Taken to Josephine Gen eral hospital by ambulance , was Gordon Clair Morris, 50, of 1501 North Riverside ave., operator of the southbound vehicle, and a passenger, Marilyn G. Morris, 23, of the same address. According to slate police, the vehicle failed to make a harp curve and loft the highway, turning over. The car was demolished. The driver was reported to be suffering from a broken collarbone and the passi'iiger, who was thrown from the ve hide, received a cut over her left eye and abrasions on the left arm, police said. Seaman Injured in Fall from Dock Portland-OTD-Melvln Wood- worth, 49, a seaman from Compton. Calif., suffered multiple injuries early today when he fell through a hole In the decking of a dock to the water 30 feet below. Woodworth, fireman aboard the S. S. Under procurement con tracts, that is. contracts or planting determined by com petitive bidding, a total of 1,116,500 tree seedlings were pluuled on 1.80.1 acres. In ad dition, direct tree seeding op erations were performed via procurement contracts on 314 acres. Planting accomplished via the terms of timber sale con tracts amounted to 87!) acres, which required 30,5()0 tree seedlings. Nine acre were direct-seeded via timber sale contracts.
