VROM Sacramento: Governor Edmund G. Brown said today he is go ing to walk the streets of California to find out whom the people of California real ly want as the Democratic nominee for President. He says: "Polls have their place, but I have long since found that the only way I can really find out what the people are thinking is to listen to them myself." He will start his walks in Los Angeles tomorrow morn' ing and will continue them in Long Beach tomorrow afternoon. TS IT A Rood idea? It certainly is if all you're interested in is PICKING A WINNER. If you happen to have strong convictions as to what is rieht and what is wrong, I think maybe you'd better do some taiKing your coif incloaH nf ins! lislpnins. Personally, I'm so foolish as to believe that over the long pull leaders who have STBIWr, CONVICTIONS OF THEIR OWN as to what is right and what is wrong will be better for us and our cnu dren than those who are phipflv pnnpprnpri with ANY THING that will get the most votes. Palate Surgery Technique Curbs Fuzzy Speech Milwaukee, Wis. (Science Service) - A new surgical technique to close and length en a cleft palate in a single, one-hour operation has been reported here. The technique was said to prevent the fuzzy speech patterns that some times follow palate operations, Drs. Richard B. Stark and Clayton R. DeHaan of St, Luke's Hospital in New York City described their new tech nique at the American As sociation of Plastic Surgeons meeting here. They said they lengthen the palate by trans ferring to it a flap of mucous membrane and muscle from the pharynx. Flap Prevents Leakage The doctors reported that the flap prevents a leakage of air into nasal passages. This leak, which causes indistinct speech, often follows conven tional palate operations lr which the cleft palate is clos ed but not lengthened. The two surgeons said they have now used the technique on 22 babies. They advised that palate op erations should be performed before a child has begun to speak. Early surgery prevents the difficult problem of re training a child to speak. The surgeons said it also may pre vent hearing difficulties. common problem among chil dren with cleft palate. The two surgeons' palate operation Is believed to be the first of its kind. Palate losing and palate lengthen ing have formerly been sep rate operations, with the lengthening operation follow ing the closing operation when fuzzy speech resulted. Higher Taxes Cause Teeth to Faff Oof Richmond, Va. - A vigor ous opponent of the proposed state sales tax gave his views at a public hearing before the finance committee of the state senate. When one of the sharp-witted senators hit him with a difficult question, the speak er sputtered so hard his false teeth flew from his mouth. But he quickly regained his comnosure. "I've lost' my shirt often times," he said, "but that's the first time I've lost my teeth over taxes." 1ST AM Phi X yM I Gelatin I Wag-log F0M I Nestle's .
