Most of Nation's Homes Lack Good Electric Wiring Drawing boards of. electri cal appliance manufactures art crowded with plana de signed to make tomorrow's living more comfortable, and household tasks less arduous. ,Yet most of the nation's homes lack adequate wiring. This improvement, however, is a good Investment that far outweighs the additional ex pense. This large percentage of American homes (some of them built within the last five years) arc so wired that a maximum of 3,600 watts of electricity are available to the home-owner at one time. Against this was cited the wattage rating of some com mon electrical appliances. The rating of a hand iron, for instance, is 1,000 watts; an automatic toaster, 1,200; refrigerators, 1,650; a three quarter ton air conditioner (window box type), 1,200. It doesn't take many appliances to add up to 3,600 when all are In operation at one time. Grown in Number Appliances have grown in number and uses. A family who a comparative few years back enjoyed eight appli ances, now has 38. That, power companies 3ay, is the real answer to higher electric bills, although basic cost is actually lower than 20 years ago. Electric lights, a toaster, a refrigerator, a ra dio, a vacuum cleaner-these luxury Items of a few years back have become necessities. The coffee maker, the range, the waffle iron and the elec tric clock, added to the com forts of home. Then came the water heater, the automatic washer, the dryer, the electric blanket. The TV set, air condition er, fry pan, space heater, de humidifier, power tools fol lowed. . In addition to the interior of the home, well planned lighting of gardens, land scapes, driveways, walks, stairs and garage areas out-of-doors not only add extra safe ty for the homeowner, but ex citing beauty. Your prize possessions such as paintings, special collec tions, fireplace details and in teresting planters lend them selves to specific lighting ac cents.
