    Most of Nation's
Homes Lack Good
Electric Wiring
Drawing boards of. electri
cal appliance manufactures
art crowded with plana de
signed to make tomorrow's
living more comfortable, and
household tasks less arduous.
,Yet most of the nation's
homes lack adequate wiring.
This improvement, however,
is a good Investment that far
outweighs the additional ex
pense. This large percentage of
American homes (some of
them built within the last five
years) arc so wired that a
maximum of 3,600 watts of
electricity are available to the
home-owner at one time.
Against this was cited the
wattage rating of some com
mon electrical appliances.
The rating of a hand iron,
for instance, is 1,000 watts;
an automatic toaster, 1,200;
refrigerators, 1,650; a three
quarter ton air conditioner
(window box type), 1,200. It
doesn't take many appliances
to add up to 3,600 when all
are In operation at one time.
Grown in Number
Appliances have grown in
number and uses. A family
who a comparative few years
back enjoyed eight appli
ances, now has 38.
That, power companies 3ay,
is the real answer to higher
electric bills, although basic
cost is actually lower than 20
years ago. Electric lights, a
toaster, a refrigerator, a ra
dio, a vacuum cleaner-these
luxury Items of a few years
back have become necessities.
The coffee maker, the range,
the waffle iron and the elec
tric clock, added to the com
forts of home. Then came the
water heater, the automatic
washer, the dryer, the electric
blanket.
The TV set, air condition
er, fry pan, space heater, de
humidifier, power tools fol
lowed. . So, the industry advises, If
you are renovating your
home, wire It for tomorrow.

Return to Elegance
Noted in Wallpaper
One of the most noticeable
trends in wallpaper today is
a return to elegance-and, it's
an elegance most everyone
can afford! You can, for in

flight artists at bargain pr'ces.
This elegance is quieter and
richer than that of yesteryear
-more suitable to this day and
age.
Historical designs of the
past are adapted by using
lighter, more subtle colors
with modern textures as back
ground for these traditional
designs.
Textures - moires, shikl
silks, linens, grasscloth, metal
lic effects, brick, stone and
marble (the field is growing
daily)-are simulated on wall
paper with or without pattern
to bring richness into the
home.

Improvement of Outdoor
Living Space Important
That it takes more than
"four walls to make a house
a home, was never truer than
today.
The modern family spends
much of its time living out
doors; improvement of those
areas require important con
sideration, too.
Outdoor improvements can
run the gamut from t stcel-or-reinforced-concrete
swim
ming pool to a grouping of
colorful sturdy steel chairs
and table.
Outdoor entertaining Is ta
ken for granted these days. A
barbecue set-up is often stan
dard equipment in most
homes. These may range from
the handy, portable steel
brazier to more lavish instal
lations with stainless steel
units, chockful of a wide va
riety of chef-pleasing gadgets.
Help Take Toil
Outdoor living Isn't much
fun, however, if it is time and
energy consuming. Fortun
ately, hand and power tools
for almost every specific job,
help take the toil from these
chores. Y
New lawnmowers for In

catch clippings and leaves,
thus eliminating raking.
Lawn sweepers, both hand
and power are now joined by
a gasoline-motor out-door vac
uum cleaner.
To ease the already over
crowded storage facilities in
most homes, prefabricated
tool houses are being offered.
These can be bolted together
in' just a few hours. Available
at building supply stores al
most everywhere, they come
in a great variety of styles
and sizes.

And-in addition to the pop
ular light and airy florals,
big and bountiful florals re
turn in full force-but with
a difference! Colors used now
are so light and lovely the
large florals add enormous
charm to the most modern
home. 1
Because of today's well de
signed modern furniture there
is always a demand for the
simple contemporary type of
wallpaper. Curved line draw
ings and flat silhouettes are
often used, combining with
texture.
And, of course-the simulat

screening, grillwork and simi

portance and interest to
rooms!
With these trends in mind.

Good Lighting Said
Important for Home
Good lighting Is important
to every home.
Not just good light to set by
and for safety's sake - but
lighting to make your home
more attractive and comfort
able. Just think of all the time
spent In the home when lights
are needed.
Until recently, few im
provements have been made
in home lighting. People still
use the same lights, outlets
and lamps - evolved out of
the odd gas lighting era.
Now - lighting devices pre
viously limited to the theater,
"plush" restaurants and spe
cial commercial projects -are
being made available for
home use - and at modest
costs, too.
Controlled Light
From such settings to the
home - comes controlled light
brightness. Special light "vol
ume control'' now gives a
choice of light brightness -just
the way you control the
sound for your TV and radio
. . . by turning a knob.
Now a product called "Lux
trol" Light Control enables
you to control brightness from
"candlelight" softness ... to
the proper light for watching
television or reading.
Light control is but one
aspect of better home lighting
- cornices, coves and valances
can be used to direct light up
or down - luminous ceilings
can add extra "glow," and
well-placed lamps for every
activity in the house - are all
important factors in "lighting
up" properly.
Eliminate Shadows
Lamps should be tall
enough, with big light-colored
shades to give plenty of light
and eliminate shadows. Spe
cial lamp controls now control
lamps from "dim to bright."
In addition to the interior
of the home, well planned
lighting of gardens, land
scapes, driveways, walks,
stairs and garage areas out-of-doors
not only add extra safe
ty for the homeowner, but ex
citing beauty.
Your prize possessions such
as paintings, special collec
tions, fireplace details and in
teresting planters lend them
selves to specific lighting ac
cents. All these better lighting
ideas, if well planned and
carefully executed, need not
be too expensive.
Your local utility, lamp
manufacturers and other light
ing specialists can give you
valuable assistance.

A new development in win
dows promises to lighten the
drudgery and reduce the toll
of household causualties at
tendant on window cleaning
and painting.
Now the sash of a wood
window can be lifted out from
inside the house! It saves to
day's homeowner about SO
per cent of the time required
for cleaning a non-removable
sash.
No ladders are needed to
reach second-story windows;
screens and storm windows
can be quickly installed or re
moved from inside the house.
Quality wood windows are
wise home investment, but
how do you tell a quality win
dow? Here are several things
to look for:
Prevent Decay
Good wood windows are
treated with a toxic chemical
preservative to prevent decay
for the "preservative treated"
scat on a wood window.
-..Windows must be weather-
tight, easy to operate, and
easy to maintain. Lopk at the
be
window farme: it should
sturdy, square, and true.
Be sure to consider the type
of glass used. Common win
dow glass ranges from grades
with imperfections - waves
and bubbles - to grades with
no perceptible flaws. Prem
ium plate glass, special-ordered,
may be tinted to re
duce glare, or made heat-ab
sorbing by the addition of a
bluish-green dye.
Quality pays for Itself.
Good wood windows will give
you a house-time of com
fort, convenience, and econo
my. And, the new removable
ones make their care much
easier.
There's a remarkable new)
asbestos and Portland cement
siding with a smooth ceramic-!
type finish on the market to- i
day. It resembles that tradi-,
tional clapboard most often 1
associated with early New
England Colonial design.
The smooth finish of this
siding is in contrast to the
slriations and textured fin
ishes of other asbestos-and-cemcnt
or compositon board
sidings. It's the only ceramic- j
type surfaced siding on the
market in clapboard form. In
addition, it is less expensive
than either painted wood or
aluminum sidings, j
This siding, "Ceramo Clap
board," product of The Philip
Carey Mfg. Company, was
tested (or three years before
its limited test distribution in
the East. j
This period proved the sid-i
ing to be a product easy to
install, practically indestruct
ible and thoroughly washable.
Since it is composed of asbes
tos and cement, It is fireproof,
rotproof and venninproot.
Each panel Is four feet long !
and, when applied, has an ex
posed surface 81.33 inches
deep. This clapboard style is,
appropriate to the contempo
rary "horizontal look" and, at
the same time, faithfully pre- j
serves the traditional Ameri
-can clapboard exterior. j
The clapboard effect is also 1
important in renovating (lie
older home; it preserves the
original character of the
house while giving it a main-,
tenance-free exterior. I

Planning a new kitchen Is
really a family affair, since;
the kitchen is the core of the
modern home. So, before em-j

ask yourself these questions:
Is your's 1 growing family?
Is the lady of the house a ca

outdoor or indoor dining? Are
you a gourmet-candlelight
cook or the "get-it-over-quick-Iy"

After analyzing your living

you want, assemble the ideas
