National Safe Boating Week To Be Observed July 3 to 9 By Presidential proclama tion, the period of July 3 to 9 has been designated Nation al Sale Boating Week and will be observed by almost 40,000,000 recreational boat- ing enthusiasts in the United States. The National Safe Boating Week committee which steers arrangements for National 0 Safe Boating Week observ ance each year met recently in New York during the 50th National Motor Boat Show Rear Admiral H. C. Perkins, Commandant of the Third Coast Guard District, was host to the group at Coast Guard headquarters. The Coast Guard auxiliary originally conceived and sponsored National, Safe Boat ing Week in order to "ad vance the precepts of safety and common sense afloat and to awaken all hands to the fact that boating is a safe sport for the entire family." The auxiliary still is the of ficial sponsor, but due to the great growth of boating and the widespread area it has infiltrated, the auxiliary has called upon other groups. local, national and regional, to assist in planning and ex ecuting the week's safety pro grams. For 1960, the committee consists of representatives of the following organizations besides the Coast Guard and auxiliary: American Boat and Yacht Council, the American National Red Cross, Boy Scouts of America, Girl 1 Scouts of the U.S.A., National Association of Engine and Boat Manufacturers, National Safety Council, National Safe Boating association, Outboard Boating Club of America, United States Power Squad rons and the Yacht Safety Bureau. Safe Boating kits Special safe boating kits have been prepared for the use of local flotillas and squadrons to aid them in local promotions, water festivals and safety demonstrations. Posters, banners, radio an nouncements and photographs have all been distributed in advance on a national basis. It is expected that a number of newspapers will duplicate their actions of last year and publish special supplements on boating safety to coincide with National Safe Boating Week. The Coast Guard auxiliary flotillas have been instructed to coordinate local promo tional activity. Yacht clubs, marine dealers, marinas, out board boating clubs, service clubs and other interested or ganizations are invited to lend every possible aid and to contact the closest auxiliary flotilla commander. The ad dress of the nearest flotilla may be obtained easily by writing the nearest Coast Guard headquarters. Courtesy Examination An important part of Na tional Safe. Boating Week is the Courtesy Motor Boat Ex amination conducted by the Coast Guard auxiliary on a continuous basis. During the special week, these examin ations will be intensified! In spection teams will be sta " tioned at strategic locations in order to be available to as many boatmen as possible. The examination will be made on any craft that re quests it. If the boat is lack ing in any of the recommend ed safety areas, the skipper is told. If the craft meets all the safety recommendations, the skipper is then awarded a 1960 decal for his windshield. Both the auxiliary and the Squadrons are urging their local units to step up their educational activities during the week with special classes that may be given to small groups in a short time. Boatmen may also register for 1960 fall boating classes in navigation and small boat handling which are conduct ed by the Power Squadrons in hundreds of cities and towns across the country. Civil Air Patrol To Have Fair Booth Arrangements have been made, through sponsorship of Alexander and Brown, to have the Civil Air Patrol dis play at the Sportsfair, accord ing to Dave Franklin, general chairman. This Year's theme for the sportsfair booth will be based on that 'mission' . . . providing -boys and girls of the Rogue valley, 1 through 17 years old, the opportunity to recog nize and accept the respon sibilities of a rapidly develop ing aerospace age. In addition to the cadet manned information service booth, according to Mrs. Mary Lou Hall, information service officer, there will be a work ing display of the radio net equipment used in the senior search and rescue operations. NEVER FAIL Oars and paddles never fail and it is al ways a good idea to have a pair in case the engine does not operate properly when you're far from shore. This is an in expensive safety precaution.
