Medford Section C Necessity for Americans To Grow Up in Deepest of Human Relationships Stressed The Future of Sex "The future of sex," wrote H. G. Wells, "is the center of the whole human future." What is the future of sex in our country? More moral slumming, more breakdown of the God-given relationship of male and female into an off-color sport, a titillating national amusement? Or will we grow up? : Growing up means reaching adult attitudes, mature and healthy adjustment. Today the public presentation of sex makes such growth exceed ingly difficult. It is not mere ly a matter of "over-emphasis." Sex could hardly be over-emphasized, being as it is the deepest of human re lationships and the well spring of man's future. The question is what is . emphasized. Love is rarely emphasized; lust is- A woman, as portray ed on so many paper-cover books, is a creature with her clothing partially off, or torn off, with a smirking man standing over her or moving toward her like a beast of prey. Women are taken. Sex is predatory. Only rarely is sex depicted as part of a total love relation ship, in which man and wom an give themselves to each other with the sanction of God and society. Sex in mar riage is more or less snub bed. As one teen-ager remark ed, "What do my parents know about sex-why they've been married for 20 years!" Seen As A Prix The chase is emphasized. Sex is seen as a kind of prize in a game of pursuit. The im plication is that once the prize is won, a new pursuit be gins. . Temptation is emphasized. Sex appeal is paraded, even A Chrysler MEDFORD, OREGON, carried to a science of body measurements, with a fantas tic stress on surface values (which may not be values at all). It is as though the hu man female were always eval-uated-as in the polls among college boys-as someone, or something "to spend three days with on a desert island" but never as a real person to join with in sharing a life time. Dr. Goodrich Schauffler, of Portland, Ore., observes, "We are preoccupied-almost obses-sed-with the superficial as pects of sex; you might say with sex as a form of amuse ment. This is not true sex, with its corollaries of love, marriage and . child-bearing." Sex is depicted today as a kind of universal tranquilizer. Its purpose, one might think, is to give a quick illusion of happiness-like a pill. It is flaunted publicly to excite and stimulate. A Built-in Frustration But beneath this veneer of good, unclean fun there is built-in frustration. Like nar cotics which are used by some to escape from problems-un-til the narcotics themselves becomes a far worse problem sex as an escape from life's pressure simply ends up be coming an added pressure. Harvard sociologist Pitirim Sorokin has warned, "Our trend toward sex anarchy has not yet produced catastrophic consequences. N e vertheless, the first syndromes of grave disease have already appear ed." Illegitimacy-an increase of 133 per cent in two decades, Sleek describes what meets the eye. Some feel we are even worse. Says Evan gelist Billy Graham, "Ameri ca has a greater obsession with sex than Rome ever had." . Even the mildest critics ac knowledge that we have much growing up to do. A good place to begin is in recognizing why the Creat or created sex at all. The pur pose of sex is, of course to produce new . life, and the Creator chose to allow hu man beings to become His partners in this amazing pro cess. Indeed it may be when sex is illicit, and that's the way it's most frequent ly depicted (or dangled like forbidden fruit) in our movies and novels. When human re production enters the picture at all, it is-as the college girl said-a tragic consequence of sex relations, an unhappy ac cident, something to be avoid ed. Stress on Uses - We need, once more, a clear view of sex as a loving and joyous comitant of mar riage, a stress on the uses rather than abuses of this m i r a culous capability. We have so widely advertised il licit sex; we have had little to say of the satisfying relation ship of two people who have given themselves to each oth er in lifetime partnership, to whom reproduction is a bless ing, not a curse. A high school girl told her father that she thought the advances made by boys were "compliments." She felt flat tered. Her father, after they had talked it over, gave her a line to remember: "When a boy wants to spend the night with you, there is no greater insult. When he wants to spend his life with you there is no greater compliment." Growing up requires, too, a spiking of the adolescent no tion that that which is for bidden is best. True, our propaganda drums - in song and film and story - keep beating for the excitement, thrills and "kicks" of illicit sex. And sex in marriage is, satisfaction. Psychiatrist Abraham Franzblau of New Ttork com ments, "The assumption that the illicit is better and more satisfying than the licit is a characteristic of immaturity. It is given circulation only by those who have never known the joys of even a moderately happy marital relationship." To psychiatrists, promiscu ity is known as an "unhappi ness disease." They are fa miliar with the futile quest for satisfaction, the inability to form a deep relationship, the remorse and loss of self respect. They are also familiar with the potential of marriage. "Marriage some times is thought of as a restriction of sex, confining it to the limits of monogamy. But, actually, marriage is the only way for real sex freedom to develop," comments Psychiatrist Fred Feldman of the University of Southern California. "An individual reveals his personality more completely, more intimately, in the sex sure, power plant ing for his final merit badge, and when this is accomplished, will become an Eagle Scout-something not too many youths with all of their facilities have been able to accomplish.
