Investment Official Speaks at Meetings A business man must "play by ear" from what he sees in his own inventory situation and not go by what he reads on a national scale in newspapers. That advice was given Wednesday by Ben C. Bowie, who addressed Medford Ki- wanians at Rogue Valley Country club. Bowie is a vice president of J. Henry Helser company, investment counsel ing firm. He was scheduled to speak at noon today at a meeting of the Rogue Valley Life Under writers association at the Rogue Valley Country club. He was to speak on the possi ble adverse effects of a grow ing competition between the investment salesmen and life insurance agents. 8 o Bowie, just returned from a trip to New York, warned Kiwanians that business an alyses and forecasts in this election year could be polit ically inclined. The speaker brought out that the country has exper ienced one of the worst weath er winters in many years. However, Bowie, on the basis of his talks with executives, economists and financiers, and his observations, expressed that there will be a rather sharp sales pick up when the weather breaks. Concern to People He said that the thing which seems to have some people most concerned is of what has happened to the stock market and whether stock market trends are the forerunner of a severe decline in business. Bowie reported that it was the attitude of professionals, in vestment managers of hand lers of trust funds, that there has not been substantial liqui dation of stock. They pointed to a slowing down of new com mon stock purchases. He said that prices of many of the better grades of common stock were pushing beyond the buy er and dividend capacity of the 1959-1960 year. Bowie stated that the sum of money which is being man aged by institutional mana- Wall Street Chatter New York -(UPD- Earnings and dividends for the first three months of 1960 will hit new peaks, but will tend to level off in the second quar ter, according to the Interna tional Statistical Bureau. The stock market, the bu reau says, will recognize the more favorable earnings while also taking into account the less dynamic business trend indicated for the last part of 1960. The bureau expects the na tion's production of goods and services to reach a new high this year. "This new record high in gross national product will not be the result of high er prices. Quotations will show very little change. It will be due mainly to greater physical volume," the bureau says. "For participation in Eu rope's vigorous economic re covery, a seasoned equity such as Woolworth has appeal," says Hornblower Vs Weeks.
