Funds from 1960 Kapers Will Be Used in Kiwanis' Clinic Thanks to a Medford Ki wanis club-sponsored project and the club's major 1959 fund-raising activity, 5 5 0 youngsters of Jackson county have received dental care al though their families could not afford to pay. The project is the county wide dental clinic in which dentists of the area cooper ate. Means of revenue to sup port the clinic is the annual Kiwanis Kapers. Proceeds from the 1959 va riety show were to a large ex tent utilized for the clinic. Dental care made possible in cluded 1,800 fillings, 510 ex tractions, five sets of dentures and seven partial plates. Do nated services provided by the dentists have been valued at between $20,000 and $25,000. Share of Kaperi Funds A big share of funds from the 1960 Kapers presentation will go toward perpetuation of this clinic. Kiwanians are now in the midst of prepara tions for their newest show of songs, jokes, skits and dances. The production, "Around the Town," is sched uled for Wednesday, Thurs ay, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24, 25, 26 and 27, at the Med ford High school auditorium. Other Kiwanis work for boys and girls also will bene fit. Some of the 1959 Kapers proceeds, for instance, went for eye glasses, oral surgery and tonsillectomies for under privileged children. Kiwan ians, too, contributed to Boy and Girl Scouts, the YMCA and the Salvation Army. They sponsor a Boy Scout troop. The dental clinic was or ganized two years ago with the Kiwanis club supplying funds. Public schools and the county health department, as well as dentists, cooperate. The health office serves as a co ordinating point for clinic op eration. Only during school months is the clinic open. Reyived Service Kiwanians with the project revived a service which the health department was forced to halt during World War II. In the years after the war, the club began to provide finan cial aid for a number of den- I tal cases. Dentists were paid working on the teeth of needy 1 for their wok, mostly at near Turn-About Party Set At Vets Domiciliary The annual turn-about party and recognition cere mony at the Camp White do miciliary will be held Feb. 26, at 8 p.m. in the domicili ary theater, according to Frank J. Glonning, chief of special services at Camp White. The ceremony consists of a vaudeville act starring domi ciliary members and presen tation of volunteer service and recognition certificates. Reservations fo Go On Sale for Kapers Seat reservations for the Medford Kiwanis Kapers may be obtained starting Monday at Barker's Men's store. The Kapers presentation, "Around the Town," will run Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights at the Medford High school auditor ium. Reserved seats can be ob tained for the last three nights of the production. Only gen eral admission tickets are be ing sold for Wednesday night when there will be a special student price. General admission tickets are available from any Ki wanis club member. Curriculum Center Topic of Meeting Rogue River - James Mc Donald, director of the Jack son county schools curricu lum materials center will show pictures and samples of the center at the regular meet ing of the Rogue River PTA, at 8 p.m., Wednesday. All parents and friends are invited to attend and inspect the new school builing, a PTA official said. Dr. William Ward, South ern Oregon college, visited the Rogue River school dis trict Wednesday, Feb. 10, and Monday, Feb. 15, as part of the survey of schools in, the state being conducted by the legislative interim education committee. He inspected - the curricu lum, counseling and guidance services, activity program and physical facilities of both the elementary and secondary schools. Board members, ad ministrators and teachers re cently completed question naires and rating sheets as part of the survey. Closed Saturdays cost. Kiwanians saw that fill ing the need under such a program was financially pro hibitive. This led to the clinic as it is today. Since school reopened in September for this school year, 300 youngsters have had dental work done. The care has included 1,231 fillings and 157 extractions. Two full den tures and a partial plate have been provided. Numerous space maintainers have been installed. Dental Committee On the Kiwanis clubs den tal committee are Dr. Ernest Duce, Dr. Billy ' Blackstone and Dr. Abner Clark, all den tists; Chester Wendt, county commissioner; John Dellen back, of the underprivileged children's committee; Frank Perl, Dwight Houghton, Ar thur Savard and Clarence Young. Non-Kiwanians on the clinic board are Dr. C. I. Drummond, county health of ficer; Dr. Dan Engle, presi dent of the Southern Oregon District Dental society; Bruce Hitt Jr., assistant county school superintendent; and Elliott Becken, assistant su perintendent of Medford schools. Helping the clinic program are Miss Frances Clink and Mrs. Betty Love, county health nurses, and Mrs. Mar tha Donahue and Mrs. Juanita Anderson, Medford school nurses. Mrs. Audrey Reiss is the full time technician and largely responsible for sched uling of dentists and patients. Smith Jr., forester for the Butte Falls district of the Rogue River National for est, has accepted a promotion to the Malheur National for est with headquarters at John Day, Ore., according to Su pervisor Carroll E. Brown. Smith received his forestry degree from Montana State university in 1955. He work ed at Union Creek Ranger sta tion during the summer of 1955. Following his return from three years' service as a first lieutenant in the Air Force, Smith started work with the Rogue River Nation al forest in April, 1958. He worked on the Butte Falls Ranger district timber sales. Since July 1, 1959, he has been working with forest fire replanning. Smith, his wife Betty, and two children will report to their new location on March 6. GASOLINE THEFTS Dallas, Ore. -IUPD- Charges of gasoline theft involving Polk county trucks have been lodged against five Dallas youths. They were arrested Thursday night. Two of the youths are 18 years old, two 17 and one 16. Area Chairmen for Heart Drive Noted Mrs. Ronald Ricketts, 143 Mullaney, 356 Lindero ave. South Keene Way, Heart Sun day chairman for the current Heart Fund drive, has an nounced that area chairmen appointments for the house-to-house collection have been completed. Heart Sunday marks the climax of the month-long drive, and blockworkers throughout the county will cover residential areas from noon until 4 p.m. Feb. 28, ac cording to Mrs. Ricketts. Three Medford women will have charge of volunteer re cruitment within the city. Mrs. Lon Skinner, 30 Port land ave., is chairman of Area A, the west side. Area B, rep resenting the east side, will be headed by Mrs. James Mrs. Ren Taylor. 1711 East Main St., is Area C chairman, having charge of the north east section. Outlying areas in the Heart Sunday solicitation program will be organized by three chairman. Mrs. Charles White will take charge of blockworkers in Ashland for her second year as. chairman.
