Demonstrations Planned Against Ike in Uruguay Montevideo, Uruguay (DPD -There would have been at least three demonstrations against President Eisenhower during his visit here had not California Convict Caryl Chessman won a reprieve, it was learned on good authority Friday night. University students had al ready arranged the demon strations. They planned to greet Eisenhower March 2 with signs reading "Mur derer" and "Hangman, Go Home." The students were ready also to call for a public boy cott that would have given Eisenhower the staring, si lent treatment received in many U. S. cities by Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev. Planned Demonstrations According to well-informed sources, the planned demon strations would have at least begun on an orderly basis, but there was grave concern that the Communist elements would have provoked out right violence. The sources said the ques tion of possible harm being done to the U. S. President came up at a meeting of the government council last Wednesday. At that time, the sources said, Minister of Foreign Af fairs Homero Martinez-Mon- tero expressed fears the at mosphere would be "too dan gerous" for Eisenhower should the Chessman execu tion be carried out on sched ule. 'Grave Concern The Council, which fulfills the functions of a president in Uruguay, was said to have chared the "grave concern" of the foreign minister and it instructed him to brief U. S Ambassador Robert Wood ward on the situation. : Uruguayans have been among the most active pro ponents of clemency- for Chessman. The books he wrote on San Quentin Pris on's death row were over night best-sellers in this country. Among the most vocal of groups demanding a reprieve for Chessman have been left ist elements and students, but newspapers also backed the cause. The Congress once passed a resolution asking U. S. authorities to spare the convict's life. - f News of his latest reprieve was greeted by joyous dem onstrations Friday.
