Communications Letters to the Editor must bear the name and address of the writer, although under certain circumstances the use of a pen name or initial for publication is permissible. The Mail Tribune reserves the right to edit all letters with a view to clarification and condensation. Letters submitted for publication must not exceed 400 words. The letters printed in this column do not necessarily represent the views of the paper; in fact the contrary is often the case. " Editor's note: We've been floods d-inundaled-wiih communications this week. At least part of the reason is an assignment in a Med ford High school English . class, for students to read the Communications col umn and then write them selves. Some of these letters have not been identifiable as such, and we suspect that several have appeared during the past few days. But we've saved those which were identifiable as part of this class project to be printed together when space permitted. They ap pear below. We welcome this interest on the part of our high school readers. The only letters which were reject ed were those which were unsigned, or which request ed that no signature appear, or (in the case of one or two) where the writer got a bit too rough on some individual. Here's a Brave Soul To the Editor: For the pro tection of our drivers on the highway, the requirements for women drivers should be stiffened. Women just can't think fast enough to drive a car in a city or town. The average woman driver is usually gawking at people or stores downtown and isn't looking where she's going. They usually signal for a right turn if they are turning left or they don't signal at all. It's a. fact that more men have accidents, but there are more men drivers. Also many of the accidents men have are to avoid hitting women drivers who have done some thing wrong. Women drivers should be limited. Jerry Anderson 2607 Eastover, Medford Whims Aren't Important To the Editor: I am a sen ior at Medford High school. In the past years I have read the letters to the editor. Per haps it is just my way of thinking but I fail to 'see the importance of some of these letters. Others are very im portant to the community and the city. Also I fail to see why you, the editor of a fine paper, would print whims of differ ent people which are of little value as an opinion or even a suggestion. I think if you left these whims of different subjects out of your paper and put something of more important value to the com munity in the paper it would improve your column and your paper. I was amazed to read the letter published Wednesday titled "This and That," which fits it perfectly. Is this a col umn for constructive argu ments and opinions or mere ly a local column publishing so-called poems written by amateur "poets?" You surely must be hard up for material, since I've never read such a collection of letters . dealing with such trivial, unimportant matters. Medford is a growing city so it seems that our paper should try to make a few improve ments by at least publishing more intelligent letters to keep up such a 'progressive city. : . .'. . 1 Teresa. Thomas, 580 Lozier Lane, . Medford. I How About II? To the Editor: Recently in my English class we have been studying writing letters of opinion. My English teach er recommended that we read vour "communications" col umn to get some examples of letters of opinion. For the last week or so I have been following this column. I have observed that most of the letters are ridicu lous. I have never read such a collection of letters. Some of them pertain to subjects of local interest but many of them are of no value at all except for something to laugh at. Many of these peo ple make fools of themselves Any stranger coming to our town would think it very strange to read such things in a newspaper in a town the size of Medford. Such things make our city look very bad. I do not wish to be rude or to make anyone angry but I do feel there are people who will agree with me. In closing I would like to ask a question. To the' Editor: There has been some comment regarding the possible restriction of the number of family and friends, we, the seniors of Medford Senior High school, will be permitted to invite to our commencement exercises. It has been said that we may be "rationed" out in vitations limited in number to those In our immediate family, "immediate family," probably meaning mother, father, and possibly brothers and sisters. Speaking for myself, and probably , many others, my grandparents postponed a Christmas visit in order that they might travel over 1800 miles from Colorado just to attend these exercises. There is a possibility, also, of friends of long standing from Southern California being here to attend. If these restrictions are im posed because of the lack of seating space, either in the Hedrick auditorium or other such facilities, it will mean that my friends, both from Medford and out of town, and my grandparents, must of necessity be told, "there is no room." We have our own high school campus, a stadium ca pable of seating far more guests than any auditorium available in Medford. The use of this stadium both for Bac calaureate and Commence ment exercises would permit practically an unlimited num ber of guests. Why not use it? Carleen Black, 621 Park St., Medford. Something Should Be Done To the Editor: Recently I have been reading your col umn "Communications" for my English assignments. Then we were to write to your column on any subject we would like to discuss. I feel that some of your letters printed are quite worthless to the majority of the public. I realize that some of the people you receive letters from have worthwhile com plaints or opinions but as far as I can see a great majority of them have nothing better to do than write silly letters to your newspaper. Aware of Errors To the Editor: Since I have taken the course of Remedial English at Medford Senior High school, I have become increasingly aware of the grammatical errors appearing in your paper. The most noticeable, I be lieve, are the errors in spell ing. For instance, the sub stituting of an "o" for an "a". or an "n" for an "m". Such errors are due mostly to care lessness or simply overlook ing the error. It is my firm belief that if such errors were omitted, your paper would improve immensely, for you print very Wants Better Horoscope To the Editor: I'm not a person who generally finds fault, so I will not phrase this as a complaint but more as a suggestion. Is it at all possible to have the horoscope that is in the paper now enlarged on as they are written in the Ore- gonian? So as the people that follow the stars, as I and my friends do, can have some thing broader to go on than just a few words. If you do that my friends and I would be greatly in your debt. You stated that if we were to make Jacksonville an historical town that would gain tourist recognition, all that would be needed is about 15-17,000 dollars, approxi mately. I don't think our only prob lem here is money, but the public interest. Although we may spend a large amount of money on restoring historical buildings, if our own public interest is low the money may end up like other tourist at tractions in this valley as a total waste of money. I do agree with you on most of your ideas but I still think that we should concentrate on enlarging our public in terest here in the valley be fore we spend a lot of money on a project of this sort.
