Sunday, Feb. 7, 1960 Cast Chosen For 'Picnic' Members of the cast for the coming presentation of "Pic nic" by the Medford Foot lighters have been announced by the play's director, Thayer Tarvin. Tarvin reported that "some very fine and promising tal ent was revealed" among the many who came to the the ater for recent try-outs. He also expressed the hope of the group that those who came will return for future produc tions. Miss Helen Ashley will play the part of Helen Potts; William Gregory, Hal Carter; Miss Patti Brewer, Millie Owens; Jack Adams, Balmer; Mrs. Del Lewellyn, Madge Owens; Mrs. Laurence Ware, Flo Owens; Mrs. Thayer Tar vin, Rosemary Sidney; Dr. Laurence Ware, Alan C. Moore; Mrs. Joseph Murphy, Irma Cronkite; Mrs. Al Reiss, Christine Schoenwalder; and Frank Buchter, Howard Bev ins. The play is to be presented sometime in March. 4 Supper Planned By Social Club; Men's Night Set Central Point Nevita So cial club will sponsor a chili supper and card party Satur-j day, February 13, in the Cra-1 ter High school cafetonum Supper will be served be ginning at 6 pjn. and games of bridge, pinochle and canas ta will start at 8 o'clock. J. Braun, 1004 Queen Anne avenue. Miss Jarman attended Med ford High school and was graduated from Los Angeles High school in California. She is employed by Polar-Cold company. '' Mr. Braun is a graduate of Medford High school and at tended Southern Oregon col lege. He served three years in the Army. The young man is employed by his father. The couple is to be married February 14. 4 Now In Kentucky Gold Hill - Mr! and Mrs. David Parker and infant daughter, Laurie Jo, are now living in Elizabethtown, Ky. Mr. Parker, who is stationed at Ft. Knox, Ky., with the United States Army military police, recently came west and his wife and child accompa nied him to Kentucky. Silver, Diamonds and Watches CARE Director Praises Work of Medford Club Travel Study club of Med ford has been commended by the director of the Northwest Regional office of CARE for the group's outstanding ef forts to raise CARE funds The Mail Tribune has re ceived a letter from Mrs. Mar guerite Kelly, Seattle, north west director, saying that the club's contribution of S300 represented a "magnificent amount." Mrs. Clay M. Lee is president of the club. The money was raised for a special project in Greece sponsored by the Oregon Fed eration of Women's clubs, with which Travel Study club is affiliated. The Medford club, one of the city's newer organizations, has but 22 members. Mrs. Lee has been informed by state federation officers that all federated clubs of the state raised but slightly more than $600. Travel Study club members gave a silver tea, a rummage sale and put out small CAKE boxes throughout the city in which citizens might place contributions. In her letter Mrs. Kelly wrote: "Hundreds of women's clubs throughout the United States which are affiliated with the General Federation of Women's Clubs, are partici pating in projects to send tools of livelihood through CARE, the international re lief agency, to neediest people in war-ravaged or underdeveloped areas over seas. ' "The Oregon Federation of Women's Clubs has had an outstanding 1 project for sev eral years and for the current period are concentrating their efforts on raising funds to send self-help equipment to Greece. This material (wood working, masonry, metal Coffee Planned By Welcome Club A Welcome Wagon club coffee party for women who have recently moved to Med ford will be held Tuesday, February 9, from 10 a.m. to noon at the home of Mrs. James Pollard, 333 Lynnwood drive. The regular meeting of the club was held Thursday, Feb ruary 4, with 20 members and two guests present. Guests were Mrs. Leo Radke and Mrs. 'Philip Detroit. Because more than two schools will be sup plied with complete kits with this amount,, through CARE, hundreds of worthy, indus trious young men and boys will have an opportunity to learn new trades, to become skilled workers in their own communities, not only sup porting . themselves and their families, but helping to build their own areas of Greece. "CARE is most grateful to the Travel club and your community for making pos sible such valuable aid to young people in one of the poorest European countries which is counted high, how ever, among our international friends. Without this kind of support, CARE could not carry on its programs for de livering aid that helps to build peace for the world." Valentine Dinner Set for Monday All Scottish Rite Masons and their wives are invited to a covered-dish dinner at the Medford Masonic temple, Monday, February 8 at 6:30 pjn. The committee in charge of arrangements includes Mrs. Clay Lee, chairman, and Mrs. Alva M. Perkins, Mrs. Hal E. Bishop, Mrs. W. O. Hughes and Mrs. Edith Grigsby. Bridge, pinochle . and ca nasta will be played. Dessert for the valentine event will be furnished by the club. Women from Grants Pass, Ashland, Shady Cove and Trail will bring salads. Those with surnames A-L wil1 bring meat dishes; M-R vege tables; and S-W, salads. Bethel Prepares For Initiation And Inspection Activities during the next ten days of Bethel 14, Inter national Order of Job's Daughters, will be in prepa ration for the formal initia tion ceremony to be held Wednesday, February 17. During the event Mrs. Joe Rogers, Independence, deputy grand guardian, will inspect the bethel. Mrs. Rogers will also visit the bethel March 2 for friendship night. Practice for the initiation ceremony will be held Sun day, Februay 14, at 2 pjn. and the full choir rehearsal will be Monday, February 15, at 6:30 p.m. All sessions will be in the Masonic temple. Clarence Smith; director of music, will hold practice for the older girls (15 years or older, or a sophomore in high school) on Monday, February 8, at 6:30 p.m. at his home, 826 Grant street. During the session of tne bethel Wednesday plans were made for a dime collection to be held March 2 in honor of Ethel T. Wead Mick, founder of Job's Daughters. This me morial will be participated in by bethels across the nation. The date is also the 26th birthday of Bethel 14. At the meeting Queen Marion Parsons . announced her project, a cooked food sale, to be held Saturday, Feb ruary 13. Members are to take pastries for which they will earn honor points. Mrs. C. D. Elhart, guardian, announced that she is accept ing applications for scholar ships to be awarded by Job's Daughters to assist girls in study beyond high school level Nine scholarships will be awarded' when grand ses sion meets in Salem JuJ'T 14 to 16. She also announced the essay contest on "How my membership in Job's Daugh ters has helped me build higher ideals." The essays are to be 500 words in length and be in by June 15. Winning essays will be placed in the Supreme Guardan's "book of memories." Bethel members were re- j minded to buy their tickets for the Leap Year Dance from Mrs. Elhart or Mrs. R. H. Den yer. The dinner dance will be held in the Rogue Valley Country club on February 19 from 8 to 12 midnight. Neighbors of Woodcraft will meet Monday, February 8, at 8 p.m. at the Eagles hall. Of ficers will be elected for the 1960-61 term. New Members Honored By Junior Women's Club A class of new members has been announced by Med ford Junior Women's club. They are Mrs. William J. Thompson, Mrs. K. W. Jen sen, Mrs. William B. Clegg Jr., Mrs. Virgil Morton, Mrs. Bob Norris, Mrs. Robert Ha worth, Mrs. James A. Wells, Mrs. Richard O'Dell, Mrs. Wayne Allen, Mrs. Robert Vincent, Mrs. John J. Owens and Miss Mary Lou Hanke. The new members were welcomed at a tea held re cently in the studio of Eugene Bennett on South Grape street. Mrs. William Sweet, presi dent, points out that the club, a unit of the Oregon Feder ation of Women's clubs, has carried on an extensive pro gram in several fields since its organization in 1958. De partments of study and activ ity emphasized by the Na tional Federation of Women's clubs are the American home, communications, community affairs, conservation, educa tion,' fine arts, religion, pub lic affairs and international affairs. Houghton, secretary of Siskiyou Pioneer Sites Foundation, will be guest speaker at the meeting of St. Elizabeth's Guild of St. Mark's Episcopal church Fri day, February 12. Mrs. Houghton will speak on "Early Churches of Jack sonville" and will show slides. Her talk will include readings from an old diary. A service of holy commun ion will be held at 11 a.m. fol lowed by- luncheon in the par ish house at noon. The pro gram will follow. Initiated Miss Marianne Samuelson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ward A. Samuelson, 506 Whitman place, a student at the University of Oregon, was recently initiated into Delta Delta Delta social sorority. In addition to this program keyed to the state and na tional federations, the Med ford club has for the last two years maintained a clothing pool to aid school children. The pool is maintained at Lin coln school, and the women are aided by the teachers, the school nurses and members of parent-teacher associations in keeping it stocked. Mrs. L. E. McConnell is pool chairman this year. In order to raise funds to buy materials for renovating the clothing, the group puts out and sells a club calendar. Two fashion shows have been held, and the club women have cooperated on the Vogue sewing contest. Past presidents are Mrs. John L. Holmes and Mrs. Rob ert W. Billingsley. Mrs. Holmes is also state chairman for a study of crime prevention and the Or egon Federation this month is stressing crime prevention under her guidance. ,-' -' In line with this emphasis, Judge Edward C. McConnell and Mrs. Eu gene W. Ingram. Medford Woman In Puerto Rico Mrs. C. Rease Braley; who left Medford recently to spend several weeks traveling, is now in San Juan, Puerto Rico, with her brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Warner, Washington, i D. C. Mr. Warner is a well known journalist. After leaving Medford Mrs. Braley spent some time in Pasadena, Calif., with her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Patton and their four children. Later she was in Coronado, Calif., with Lt. Com. Charles R. Braley, Mrs. Braley and their family. Lt. Com. Braley is on duty at the San Diego Naval base. In Florida Mrs. Braley vis ited a brother, Douglas War ner, at Sarasota before leav ing for Puerto Rico. The trav eler plans to return to Med ford in March. Women of Rotary To. Department Head To Visit Medford The Oregon department president will be a guest at the March meeting of Med ford unit of the American Legion auxiliary Wednesday, February 10, at 8 p.m. at the home of Mrs. Earl Bigalow, 104 King street.
