Thundiy, Dec. 17, 1959 New Ventilator Might Replace The Iron Lung Cambridge, England -(Science Serviced- Following ex tensive research and close co operation between the medi cal profession and precision engineers, an electronic lung which can replace iron lungs, has been perfected. Called the Barnet Ventila tor, the lung has been a joint venture by several British electronic companies, each of which contributed specialized knowledge and technical fa cilities. The instrument is manufactured bv W. Watson and Sons, Ltd., a member of the Pye Instrument group of Cambridge. Paralysis of the muscles of respiration is a frequent re sult of poliomyelitis ana ine life of tiatients suffering from this manifestation of the dis ease depends upon prolonged artificial respiration. Uia of Iron Luna In the past patients have had to be Dut in an iron lung, which is essentially an air tight box in which pressure is varied, by means of pumps, hetween Dositive and negative values, each cycle causing the lungs to inflate and deflate within correct physiological limits. The iron lung is an effec tive machine for sustaining life but, since only the heaa nf the natient is o u t s i d e the lung, dependence upon nurs ing staff is complete. The pa tient has no liberty whatso ever. Treatment of such cases by means of the Barnet Ventila 4m. ih natient consider able freedom. Instead of be ing encased in a box the pa tient is linked to the ventua tor hv two nlastic tubes Breathing is sustained by the alternation of positive and neeative pressure, air being pumped into the lungs during the positive phase and extract ed during the negative. The number of respirations per minute, the ratio of inspi ratnrv to exoiratory time and the volume of air entering and leaving the lungs are mat ters o! very great importance. By using the Barnet Ventila tor anv. or all of these facil ities ran be instantly and pre cisely adjusted within physio logical limits. Ventilation Lioht The iron lung is large and heavy and when it is neces sary to move a patient, ser ious transDort problems arise. The Barnet Ventilator, on the other hand is very portable and weighs only 56 pounds. It has built-in batteries from which its transistorized cir cuit will run for up to 20 h o ii r without recharging. Thus the polio patient can be moved from one hospital to another or by air between continents without difficulty. Tn addition to its use in DOlio the Ventilator is of the utmost value in everv case of respir atory insufficiency arising from any cause. Science for All Urged on Radio, TV Washington (Science Serv ice) Television and radio should present science in all aspects to the public and not rely on a few "spectaculars" and a spotty presentation of news to serve the public with science. This was one of the points made by Dr. Watson Davis, director of Science Service, Washington, m testimony be fore the Federal Communica tions Commission. He also advocated a nation wide science club program over TV, contending that teen agers would watch it with as much interest as they view popular programs now on the networks. "There are tremendous pos sibilities in the use of infor mation as entertainment,' Dr David said. "Much of the early popularity of the quiz shows was derived from their infor mational content."
