Reveals How To Assist Refugees Washington - OJPD - For $36, you can teach a Hong Kong refugee a trade by which he can earn a living. For $200, you can provide furniture and house hold equipment for a European refugee family moving from a camp into a home of their own. For $500, you can provide a monthly milk ration for 1,000 refugee children in North Africa. For $1,500, you can under write life-long care of one aged refugee in a well-run home in Austria. These figures come from the U.S. Committee for Refu gees, which is directing Amer ican participation in the cur rent International Refugee Year. List of Needs They were compiled for the benefit of thousands of in dividuals, church societies, civic clubs and other organi zations that have written to the committee asking how they can help. Knowing that Americans naturally think in terms of specific projects and concrete goals, the committee made up a long list of things that ur gently need doing on behalf of refugees around, the world. And it placed a realistic "price tag" - an estimated ac tual cost - on each of these projects. The idea is that a group or an individual may want to adopt one particular project, and underwrite its cost as a contribution to the Refugee Year effort. It was cre ated to stimulate and coordi nate public support for the numerous voluntary agencies which have been serving refu gee needs, to the best of their limited financial ability, since the end of World War II. Among the principal relief agencies in the field are Church World Service, a branch of the National Coun cil of Churches: Catholic Re lief Services; the Lutheran Refugee Service; the United Hias Service; and American Middle East Relief, Inc. The Very Rev. Francis B. Sayre Jr., Dean of Washing ton Episcopal Cathedral and chairman of the U.S. Commit tee for Refugees said it is "hoped" that Americans will contribute upwards of $20, 000,000 to refugee relief through private channels be fore the special year ends next June 30. Tax - deductible contribu tions may be made directly to the voluntary relief agency of your choice, or through the committee itself. Aluminum Talks Ponder Proposals Chicago (UPD Negotiators for five aluminum companies Wpdnpsdav considered "fringe economic proposals" made by United Steelworker president David J. McDonald in a top level conference. McDonald conferred with executives of the firms Tues day in a meeting charged with hopefulness for an early settlement of contract dis putes pending since the pacts expired last July 31. McDonald and Arthur J. Goldberg, USW general coun sel, conferred with other un ion officers today while the company negotiators sought to determine the cost of the fringe benefits outlined by the USW head. The industry spokesman said joint talks would be re sumed after the firms com plete research on the propos als, believed to include re quests for broadened pension programs. Brackish Water Used For Crop Production . Washington (Science Serv ice) - Brackish water can be used for crop production if it is one-tenth to one-efghth as salty as seawater. Thus, many crops can be saved during droughts by irrigation with brackish water in coastal areas where the sea has flood ed into surface water sources or infiltrated wells. Growers wishing to make safe and ef fective use of salt water should make arrangements for analysis of the salt con tent through their county ag ricultural agents or soil con servation service, the U.S. Department of Agricultura reports.
