Gil ford, will be assisted by Mrs. Frank, Glonning, Mrs. R. M. Spencer, and Miss Florence Gilford. - ; Talent Couple Observes 50th , Wedding Anniversary Talent - Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ottinger, Talent, were hon ored November 29 at an open house in observance of their golden wedding 'anniversary. Host esses for the event were Mrs. Dee Parker, Eugene, and Mrs. Howard Pickering, nieces of Mrs. -Ottinger and Mrs. Ches ter Parker. Assisting them were Sherry and Judy Parker, daughters of Mrs. Dee Park er; Mrs. Clarence Mathes, Ashland; Mrs. Bennie Breeze, Yreka, Calif.; Mrs. T. E. Mc Graw, Phoenix; Mrs. Gilbert Munden, Mrs. William Boone, Mrs. H. O. Martin and William Cate, all Medford. Mr. Ottinger came to Med ford in 1905 from Missouri with his three sisters. He owned the first automobile in Medford, a two-cylinder Bu ick, with which he ran a jit ney service to Jacksonville, Ashland, and other points in the valley. He also establish ed the first laundry truck de livery service and janitor service in Medford. He planted and cared for the trees in Medford City park near the library and operated the first restaurant in Med ford besides the one in the Nash hotel. It was located on Front street. Mr. Ottinger later ran a skating rink in the old theater building where the Jackson hotel now stands. It was at the rink that he met his future wife who came to Medford from Calif ornia . in 1900. The couple traveled to Mis souri in 1921 on a six months trip and en route home stopped at Thermopolis Hot Springs state park in Wyoming. It was then that Mr. Ottinger had the idea of developing the hot springs near Ashland. He leased 20 acres of land near Ashland in 1922 and built the pool, "bath house and dance floor. The buildings burned in 1933, which he rebuilt and operated until the business was leased in 1938 and later sold. Mrs. Ottinger is active in a number of organizations. She is chairman - of the County Committee of Extension Serv ice, was a director of the Jackson County Public Health association for several years; Red Cross worker; on the board of directors of Oregon Extension ' Service, Corvallis; district director of Oregon Federation of Women's clubs; on the Camp Fire Girls 'coun cil; is a past president of Tal ent Community club, and Tal ent Garden club; and is pres ent ! district, parliamentarian 1 '-hcO mKM v'ti A Zt Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Ottinger, who were married November 29, 1909, in the former Jackson, County .courthouse in Jack sonville, celebrated Iheir golden wedding day with an open house. Mr. Ottinger was an early-day business man in this area; he developed and operated Jackion Hot Springs resort for a number of years and planted and cared for the trees in Medford's library park. The Ottingers live near Talent. West Side Mothers' Club Hears Christmas Story Christmas was the theme of the Wednesday, December 9, meeting of the West Side Mothers' .club held at the school. Mrs. Gladys Todd of the Jackson County Board of Christian Education present ed the Christmas story, using scenes on . f eltgraph, as she does when teaching students of her Bible history classes in the schools. Mrs. Jefferey Shute, leader of Brownie Scout Troop 118, reported that her group has made 50 favors to be placed on the Christmas day food trays of children in Rogue Valley hospital. They will present the favors to the hos pital on Wednesday, Decem ber 16, when they will be tak en on a tour of the hospital. Girl Scout Troop 160 and their leader, Mrs. Charles for the Federated Women and Garden clubs. Among other' relatives at tending the recent anniversary open house were Dee Parker, Mrs. Betty Kirkpatrick, sister of Mr, Ottinger; Mrs. Ray Wil son, niece of Mr. Ottinger; Mr, Wilson and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Joe McKnight. Shinn, and assistant leader, Mrs. John Fleeger, made fav ors for Thanksgiving trays and toured the hospital on No vember 24. Herert G. Wing, principal, announced that the annual Christmas program, this year entitled "Carolling 'Round the World," will be presented at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, De cember 15, in the school audi torium. All parents and friends are invited to attend. Stockings were stuff ed un der the direction of Mrs. Oli ver A. Gustafson, Christmas stocking chairman, and Mrs, Ed-ia Olson. The . stockings will be distributed to the chil dren by Santa after the Christmas program. Co-hostessing the refreshments-were Mrs. W. A. Graff Jr., Mrs. John Gates and Mrs. E. L. Jack. Mrs. Frances Taylor, 108 Newtown avenue, returned to her home Thursday following a week's trip to California visiting relatives. Mrs. Taylor visited her niece and family in McLeod en. route to Red ding where she was a guest of a sister, Mrs.John Fenno. While there two other Sisters visited at the Fenno home. IN THE MEDFORD SHOPPING CENTER Marcia Barrell Elected Queen Of Bethel 55 Miss Marcia Barrell is the honored queen-elect of Beth el 55, International Order of Jobs Daughters. She was elected at a meeting held at Pythian hall December 8. Miss Barrel is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Bar rell, 101 Greenway drive. Other officers elected were Miss Teresa Six, senior prin cess; Miss Jane Ward, junior princess; -Miss Barbara Mitch ell, guide; and Miss Lauri Beth Buonocore, marshal. The elective and appointive officers will be installed at a special meeting on December 29, Retiring Queen Barbara Gordon reminded officers that the bethel will present its closing ceremonies and take part in entertainment for Roxy Ann court, Order of Amaranth, December 17 at the Masonic temple. Members were urged to se cure their tickets for the Med ford De Molay,- Jobs Daugh ters dinner-d a n c e at the Rogue Valley Country club on December 18. Bethel 14 will also participate. The bethel was invited to attend the December 19 meet ing of Medford Masonic lodge 103 when John Eddy will be Junior Council Plans Meeting - The Junior Red Cross coun cil will hold their monthly meeting on Tuesday, Decem ber 15, at noon, at the Red Cross chapter house, with the president, David Irving, pre siding. Their project for the month for the council mem bers is ,to decorate the food cartons in which food will be packed for distribution to needy families at Christmas time. Mrs.- Reese Alexander, chairman, states that Junior Red Cross in the schools is very active at this time of the year. The high school is col lecting Christmas tree orna ments and the junior high and grammar schools are making ornaments which they will use for decorating the trees at the Veterans Domiciliary at Camp White. The advanced art class at Crater High school is mak ing large mobiles and window decorations. A group of the children will go to Camp White on December 19 to do the decorating. As In past years, there will be the collecting of canned goods in all the schools for food baskets for the needy.
