Chuck Reiley went one yard for one score and center Buck Jully galloped 14 yards with an intercepted pass for the final tally. South Carolina, sparked by quarterback Steve Satterfield and fullbacks Phil Lavoie and John Saunders, pulled ahead 8-0 in Lavoe's one-yard plunge early in the first period. La voie ran for the two-pointer. Satterfield's two touch downs on runs of five and two yards - matched by scores by .Allen and Manning, "gave the Gamecocks a 20-18 half time lead. The Deacon's drove to the South Carolina 10 late in the half but Neil MacLean's field goal try on 'the last play was wide. It took the Deacons only a few minutes to go ahead to stay early in the third period. One scoring drive fell short when Jim Costin intercepted a Snead pass in the Gamecock end zone. But the Gamecocks had to kick and the Deacons drove right back in three plays with Futch going the final 26 yards to put them ahead to stay. Tempers flared briefly be tween the last two , Deacon scores and players from both teams mixed it up with fans along the sidelines. But police and officals, aided by the South Carolina band's play ing of the National Anthem quickly restored order. SW Conference Title '.Tied By TCU, Arkansas, Texas Fort Worth, Tex. (DPD A crashing defense and scatback Harry Moreland's 47-yard scamper carried Texas Chris tian to a 19-0 victory Satur day over Southern Methodist and gave the Christians a Southwest Conference co championship with. Arkansas and Texas. The defending champions' great tackle tandem of Don Floyd and Bob Lilley led the defensive charge that blocked two SMU punts, one of which set up a touchdown, threw passer Don Meredith for huge losses and kept so much pres sure on the SMU ace that he "misfired repeatedly. , Meredith was tossed for four yards in losses and SMU wound up with a minus-one-yard rushing "total." . Halfback . Marvin Lasater scored two" of the victor's touchdowns, one on - a nine- yard surge behind tremendous blocking early in the second quarter and the other on a 15 yard flip from Larry Dawson with only 35 seconds to play. Moreland's sparkhnu run. which provided the crowd of 40,000 with its biggest first half offensive thrill, came with about a minute left in the second quarter and after a Jimmy Gilmore punt had put SMU in a deep hole , by bouncing out of bounds on the one-yard line. Primarily Defensive, Despite the scoring action,! the game primarily .was one of great -defensive play and fierce blocking by Texas Christian. Floyd, Lilly, Guard Roy Lee Rambo and Fullback Jack Spikes broke through time and time again to spill Mere dith for losses or to keep so much pressure on hi mthat he overshot receivers in the clear -an-extreme rarity for the SMU ace who holds the na tional career record for com pletion proficiency'. Meredith closed out his col legiate ' career, barring pos sible post season action, with a better 'than a .500 average, but the 115 yards netted on his 14 hits out of 25 attempts couldn't carry the Mustangs any deeper than the TCU 18 yard line. Meredith wound up a three year career with 241 comple tions out of 395 attempts-or 61 per cent, as compared to the .previous record of 57.1 per cent set by Paul Larson of California in 1952-53-54. Meredith gained 3128 yards and hit for 25 touchdowns. All of the defensive spark lers weren't produced by TCU, however, aside from the time it let Moreland get away on a darting run up the mid dle, SMU fairly well con tained the touted TCU rush ing attack in the clutches and minimized Spikes' fullbock thrusts. A chilling, 20-mile north wind and an SMU "jinx" spoiled TCU kicking special ist R. E. Dodson's season-long string of perfect conversions. When his try after the initial touchdown twisted off into the teeth of the wind, it marked an end to an 18-kick spree that extended back to the SMU game a year ago.
