(UPI Telephoto) OSAA Use Of Portland Refs Irks' Multnomah Stadium, Port land - With all the sweetness of victory here Friday night, Medford's state championship football game with Jefferson left a bitter taste. This stemmed from use of four Portland area officials as arbiters for the tussle when a-Portland high school was participating, Portland men used despite' a Medford pro test. ' "We won, I'm thrilled, I'm happy but I'll never bring a team up here again under those circumstances," Tor nado head Fred Spiegelberg declared. He expressed the thought that Medford "had to beat 15 men." Penalties and the fact that Medford was given only three downs with the ball in the final seconds instead of four were reasons for ire. Medford in these closing moments was trying to run out the clock and hang onto the ball. It did no good for the Tornado to protest that a down had been taken away. . The program listed the field officials for the game as Dan Jones, Len Younce, .Lloyd Zimmerman and Bill Love. Spiegelberg praised his team's defense which held up when it needed to most. Marshfield Defense Tougher The "real happy" players, in comparing foes in their two hardest games this year, agreed generally that Marsh field was tougher than Jeffer son on defense. The Demos were not so hard to move out they felt, but they (the Tor nadoes) had troubles with their own offense and with penalties.. Big end Lowell Dean said SF Coach Takes Leave By SCOTT BAILLIE San Francisco - (DPD Ross Giudace, one of the University of San Francisco's great come through men, took over Satur day for basketball coach Phil Woolpert who will start a one year's leave of absence due to a bad case of nerves. Woolpert, who coached USF to a, pair of NCAA titles and was hailed as a genius, an nounced Friday that he would take a year off on doctor's orders. There was speculation he might make it permanent. that he was tripped while try ing to go for a pass in the end zone and pushed on another receiving try but that he did not know whether it was in tentional. '( Coach Tom DeSylvia of Jefferson praised the running of Skip Bennett of Medford, opined that his team would have come out better had it been able to handle the Tor nado quarterback. He spoke of the punt runback for a touchdown by Medford's Ken Durkee as the turning point of the game and claimed that a Tornado clip occurred on the play. DeSylvia remarked, oddly, that his Democrats just didn't get the breaks. They annexed the school's first Oregon football championship in 15 long years. Tribute had to go to the spirit of Tornado players-their desire and fighting heart-and to resolute defense which stood up courageously and solidly when it was needed rAost. For the Medford aggre gation fought against an eve ning of adversity to rise up and wrest ' the mantle from Jefferson of Portland's de fending champs. Jefferson headed the statis tics. The Democrats also got the breaks. Each team scored a touchdown on a dazzling, spine chiller play. But, Med ford battered for an all-important extra marker to end Jeffs two-year reign. The 7 to 6 margin brought Medford, five times a state grid final ist, its second official Oregon diadem. Its' last was in 1944. Victory gave the Black Tor nado the laurels only in Class A-l. But the trophy is emble matic of THE championship for the A-l's are Oregon's big ger schools. ' Demos Stopped Ken Durkee romped for Medford's touchdown in the second quarter on a 77-yard punt return. Jefferson struck for its tabulation in the fourth and final period on a 66-yard Mel Renfro to Herb Wash burn pass. Skip 'Bennett smacked right tackle for the winning conversion point. When the Democrats tried to run their extra counter; the Tornado defenders aroused to hurl Harvey Jackson back. . The titular engagement, a 'natural" between Oregon's No. 1 and 2 ranked teams, who were the finalists in 1958, was one of the tensest, heart palpitating tussles in the an nals .-of toe playoffs and it drew the all-time biggest crowd, 21,512 fans. Medford with the joyful tri umph evened for last year's 21 to 7 loss to Jefferson and stopped at 3 4 the Demos three-year winning string. The Tornado accomplished the school's first unbeaten -gridiron season since 1944. Its record is 12-0. Jeff took 11 straight this season before falling Friday night. For Med ford coach Fred Spiegelberg the title came in his eighth season at the helm. He's had two other state finalist con-tingents-In 1956 as well as in 1958. Defense Takes Cue Black Tornado offense Fri day night, beset by penalties, did not match the efficiency of most other games this fall. But, defense took the cue. It threw back Jeffs deepest pen etration other than on the touchdown throw, rejected the conversion bid and effec tively contained Mel Renfro, the Democrats' great back field ace. The spongy, shock absorber Tornado protection did give 73 yards to the elu sive Demo but it required 20 carries with the ball and only twice did Renfro shake free for any gain of length: Lowell and Cal Dean, Jer ry Anderson, Bennett, Reggie Breeze, Terry Earl, Dick Rags- Electric Socks! 1. Ragsdale took a 32-yard punt by Jeffs Mike Barnes on the Tornado 23. Just before he was tackled, he reversed to Ken Durkee, who scooted toward the right sideline. He was able to turn the corner on Lowell Dean's crashing block which took out three men. With other good screening Durkee romped away to score. Penally Hurts The Jefferson counter came with 4 minutes 52 seconds left in playing time and after the Demos had their backs to the wall in a seemingly hopeless cause. Jeff had taken over on its own six-yard line after fiz zle of Medford's best offensive march. Renfro chucked a pass to Jackson good for 13 yards. Jackson struggled to break loose from a horde of Tornado tacklers and their efforts to bring him down resulted in a personal foul ruling.' That put the ball out to the 34. Renfro faded and hurled long down the field. Wash burn on the run snared the ball around Medford 25 or 30 yard line with an over the shoulder catch, - despite Jim Barry's defensive efforts, and raced on to the goal. f The Tornado's big offensive push opened in the early fourth stanza with the ball on the Medford 36 and barged 62 yards to the Demo two only to have two penalties ruin, the effort. Ten plays with Bennett and Mike Hood tot ing made it first down on the two. Hood ripped off 14 yards on one run and Bennett 13 and 10. Passes Fail Offside shoved M e d f o r d back to the seven but Durkee gained back to the five. A backfield in motion assess ment penalized the Tornado to the 10. Ragsdale passed in to the end zone to Anderson who was covered by Renfro and Mike Christy and could not retain the ball. A short pass, Hood to Ragsdale, got back to the six, but intended receiver Lowell Dean was tripped on a fourth down aeri al try by Ragsdale, and Jef ferson took over the ball.' The march seemed stopped in mid-field when Barnes had to punt, but a personal foul was flagged on the Tornado. That gave Jefferson first down on the Medford 35. Three more plays, including a 15-yarder by Barnes moved to the 14 yard line. ' ' There Ron Hergert, trying, to pass, was . hemmed in by Anderson and Breeze and Bennett slashed into knock him down. Renfro on an end slant gained three yards back to the 19. Then came a mis fired reverse play and- the Medfords broke in to down Hergert for a six-yard loss. Medford got the ball on the 25. Jeff Gets Ball Dan Sieg, booming for the Tornado, fumbled and the ball bounded to the 40. It appeared that Lowell Dean had saved it for Medford but officials awarded Renfro the recovery for Jeff possession.: , A couple of infractions charged to Jefferson helped Medford spurn another threat. After Earl and Durkee kept Jackson from nabbing a Her gert pass, Medford had the ball on its own 36. Three plays made just five yards for the Tornado but Lynn Knight, who averaged 37.8 yards on five punts for Medford, got off his best kick of the night. It went for 49 yards and rolled out of bounds on the Jefferson nine. Jeff made the evening s first invasion into rival terri tory, reaching the Medford 37, but Renfro was trapped for a five-yard loss with Cal Dean forcing him oyer the sidelines on the fourth down play, A Bennett fumble wrecked the Tornado's next try to march. However, Medford looked goal bound its next time with the baU. Good Return - Ragsdale caught a Barnes punt, faked to Durkee, and with a good block by Ander son, almost got away. Wash burn stopped him after a 28 yard run to the Tornado 48 M e d f o r d carried in seven plays to the Jefferson 31. It seemed a sure first down. But the ball was moved back a bit before the measurement, and Jefferson was given the ball on downs. There Bennett Smear ed Renfro for an eight-yard loss. Anderson and Bennett teamed to set back Renfro an other four on a reverse off a fake punt on fourth down. Medford assumed possession on its 45. The final moments of the fracas had fans on the edge of their seats. After the Jeff TD, three plays failed to yield first down for Medford and it had to give up the ball. Knight's 37-yard punt put Jeff back on its 34. Ragsdale, Dur kee and Cal Dean teamed up to bust up a Renfro pass thrown toward Lee Eilertson. Anderson's interception of a Renfro heave cracked the last Democrat danger. Medford ran out the clock. Smartly Stall Medford's stalling game wasn't popular with the Jef ferson fans but it was the in telligent tiling to do. Two runs by Bennett moved the ball from the Jeff 43 to first down on the 32. With just-seconds left to play the ball was snapped to Ragsdale on keep er plays. One lost two and another one yard. A personal foul was called on Medford, then illegal pro cedure on Jeff. For some rea son,, the officials ruled it fourth down, instead of third, giving some hope to the ap parently Jefferson cause with just 16 seconds remaining. The ball was given again to ; Ragsdale who faded and dodg- j ed tacklers, letting the time j tick' by. He ' was finally brought down with some time left but the horn blared be fore the Portlanders could run a play. In addition to Renfro's 73 yards against a four-man line Medford defense, Barnes 1 got 58 rushing. Dan Sieg collect ed 49 for the Tornado, Ben nett ran for 48 and Hood for 42. Medford allowed Renfro one run of 28 yards and an other of 15. Barnes got free for 15 and 11. For the Torna do, Bennett had scoots of 13, 12 and 10 and Hood 14. Jefferson outdid the Tor nado in net scrimmage yard age, 252 to 144 and in first 1 downs, 10 to' 7. Medford had only one first down in each of the first two periods and none in the third quarter. The Democrats beat, out Medford just 143 to 129 in net rushing yards, but beat them 109 to 15 in the air.
