Navy blasted Army, 43-12,
ia a record victory and then
indicated it may turn thumbs
down on a proposed Liberty
Bowl berth while Mississippi,
' Georgia, Georgia Tech and
Clemson accepted major bowl
bids on this final Saturday of
the college football season.
.' A crowd of 100,000 at
Philadelphia saw Joe Bellino
become the first Navy player
to score three touchdowns
against Army in an amazing
show of superiority over a
Cadet team that was rated a
SVi-point favorite. The 43
points were the most ever
amassed by one team in the
history of the inter-service
classic.
Liberty Bowl officials said
after the victory that Navy

Mississippi Accepts
Suaar BovI Bid
Starkville, Miss..-ra - The
University of Mississippi for
mally accepted a bid Saturday
to meet Louisiana State in the
Sugar Bowl Jan.'l in a "re
match" of the two southeast
ern conference powers. LSU
won the regular season game
7-3, which was Mississipppi's
only 1959 defeat.
Mississippi athletic director
,Tad Smith announced the
Rebel's acceptance of the Su
. gar Bowl invitation at the
conclusion of Mississippi's 42
0 victory over mississippi
State here Saturday.
Sugar Bowl President Monk
'Simon, who attended the
game, said "we feel we have
the outstanding bowl game
of the day."
The Sugar Bowl game will
be a replay of what a lot of
people consider the outstand
ing game of the 1959 college
football season.
On the night of Oct. 31 at
Baton Rouge, La., in the LSU
stadium, the two unbeaten
giants of the i Southwestern
conference metf or a head-on
clash. Bariy in the drst per
iod, Robert Khayat kicked a
field goal and Mississippi held
this, slim lead for three per
iods. .
With 10 minutes left to play
in the final period, LSU star
halfback Billy cannon fielded
a punt, shook off half a dozen
tacklers and ran 89 yards for
an LSU touchdown.
Mississippi came storming
back and worked the ball to
the LSU one yard -line, but
the Louislan Bengals held on
downs as the clock; ran out.
Urge .Rematch
Immediately . after this
game, agitation started for a
rematch in a bowl. Mississippi
Coach Johnny Vaught said
he "would ; love" ' to have
another crack at' LSU. There
appeared little chance because
LSU had everything to lose
and nothing to gain by a re
match. -.
But the following week
Tennssee upst LSU 14-13, and
thef ollowing week Mississip
pi routed Tennessee 37-7. This
put boosted the Rebels ahead
of LSU in the National rank
ings and put a different com
plexion on a possible bowl re
match. LSU Coach Paul Diet
zel said it was hard to under
stand how a team LSU had
defeated could be ranked for
a bid to the Sugar Bowl. Diet
zell said his squad hoped to
play Mississippi in a playoff
game to determine which is
the best team in the nation."
In regular season play, LSU
had nine victories and the
one-point defeat at the hands
of Tennessee. The Bengals
whipped Rice, TCU, Baylor,
Miamai, Kentucky, Florida,
Mississippi State and Tulane.
Mississippi, also had nine vic
tories and that four-game loss
to LSU. The Rebels beat Hous
ton, Memphis State, Vander-
bilt, Tulane, Akansas, Chat
tanooga, Tennessee and Mis
sissippi State.
LSU, on the season, scored
164 points and held its oposi
tion to 29. Mississippi scored
329 points and yielded 21 to
its opponents.

Chuck Reiley went one

South Carolina, sparked by
quarterback Steve Satterfield
and fullbacks Phil Lavoie and
John Saunders, pulled ahead

Satterfield's two touch

was wide.
It took the Deacons only a

One scoring drive fell short
when Jim Costin intercepted
a Snead pass in the Gamecock
end zone. But the Gamecocks
had to kick and the Deacons

plays with Futch going the
final 26 yards to put them

but the 115 yards netted on
his 14 hits out of 25 attempts
couldn't carry the Mustangs

Meredith wound up a three

61 per cent, as compared to
the .previous record of 57.1

Meredith gained 3128 yards
and hit for 25 touchdowns.
All of the defensive spark
lers weren't produced by
TCU, however, aside from the
time it let Moreland get away
on a darting run up the mid

minimized Spikes' fullbock

When his try after the initial
touchdown twisted off into
the teeth of the wind, it
marked an end to an 18-kick

the SMU game a year ago.
