Back Stairs: Eisenhower's Thriftiness Bt merriman smith UPI Whit House Reporter Washington (DPD-Back stairs at the White House: President Eisenhower does not have to go out and buy his own magazines, but never theless, he's thrifty about them. Before leaving Walter Reed Army Medical Center last week after his annual check up, the President carefully packed two current weeklies he had been reading in his overnight bag along with his pajamas and shaving gear.. The bag was sent down to the President's limousine a few minutes before Eisenhow er departed. At the last min ute, the President sent a hos pital orderly and Secret Serv ice agent to the car to open the bae and retrieve the magazines. The President then took them to the hospital room of Secretary of Agriculture Ezra T. Benson and said, "here's something for you to read Benson was in the hospital for treatment of an inflamed gall bladder. The White House ran out of stamps the other morning. Had to send for some in a hurry. Members of Congress can send out tons of mail with no stamps, just the congressional frank. But every piece of mail leaving the .White House re quires regular stamps. This Is the season when Washington newspaperwomen are unusually vocal about be ing excluded from certain stag press dinners, particular ly those the President attends. Eisenhower has been to one this year - the White House Correspondents Ass ociation annual affair which is strictly stag. Press secretary James C.v Hagerty brought on the lat est burst of female complaints by viewing -the situation with mock alarm at a luncheon given for Mrs. Eisenhower by the Women's National Press club. The President has been told that the ladies do not like be ing excluded from press af fairs which he attends, but his position has been that he's the guest, not the host. As for stag dinners in the White House, he regards that as entirely his own business. One sure way to stay off of an Eisenhower guest list is to make an incident of not being invited. A number of promi nent Americans know this to their regret. Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF The ladies have been some what wary of kicking up any public, storm about getting into two other types of stag dinners for the press. ' There has been no known demand for female admission to the Gridiron dinners (most of the girls' bosses are mem bers or guests). And Eisen hower seem to be under no pressure to include women reporters at private dinners he has given for the press. JOE WELCH, the brilliant Massachusetts lawyer who achieved national fame at the Army-McCarthy hearings, told Editor Curtiss Anderson, "Storms never frighten me. My intellect tells me I could get hurt or even killed, but is there any more graceful, natural way to die than by a sudden, beautiful stroke of lightning coming down from-the skies? And I'd rather be bit by a tornado than some hellish ma chine built by human beings ... I guess you'd say I simply have an at titude about weather!"
