' Service was inaugurated to Bellingham, Wash., Kalispell, Cut Bank-Shelby and Great 'falls, Mont. The company also has an--' Bounced that it has petitioned the Civil Aeronautics Board - ft reopen the record in the Montana Local Service case and reconsider the company's proposal to provide local air service between Boise and the : ' western Montana cities of Batte, Helena, Great FaLut and Billings. -: West Coast asked reconsid eration on the basis of its o present ability to offer single . carrier service between Boise and Klamath Falls, Sacramen ' to and San Francisco-Oakland. The company began service from Boise to the Bay ' area via intermediate points Sept. 15. : . Mekvold Attending Seattle Meetings Alf B. Mekvold, Jackson county school superintendent, is attending a meeting of aounty superintendents and ' rural area educators in Seat 1 tie, Wash., this week. Hill of the Wash ington Supreme Court. o 9 Explosive Course Scheduled in City Approximately 50 state, county and city law enforce ment officers and city fire men will attend a course in .explosive ordnance recon naissance training Tuesday, Oct.,27. The course, offered by the Army, will be held in,, the council chambers at the Med foftf city hall from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 pjn. The course is designed pri marily for law enforcement officers, fire fighters and oth ers having an active part in Civil Defense. It includes the identification of unexploded ordnance, such as bombs, rockets, shells, guided mis- , siles and includes a briefing . on the identification of nu clear devices. , , . . ' Study of Virus In Chickens Upped Washington - (Science Service) A virus-caused can cerous disease of chickens is coming in for some intensive study with the awarding of a $100,000 research grant, the U. S. Department of Agricul ture announced here. Funds from the grant, made by the American Cancer So ciety, will be used to step up research on three main types of avian leukosis, as the dis ease is called. Scientists at the USDA's Regional Poultry Research Laboratory in East Lansing, Mich., have already shown that this poultry can cer is caused by a virus. They have transmitted the-virus to other chicks and have immu nized chicks against the dis ease. Poultry cancers cannot be transmitted to humans but it is expected that research re sults can be applied to human cancer studies. Dr. Ben R. Burmester, USDA biologist, will direct the research program which will now include a larger staff. Study of visceral lym phomatosis, or "big liver" disease-one of poultry's biggest killers-will be emphasized. It is one of the most difficult of the avian cancers to detect.
